Travis,
Thats why I didn't do anything after I changed my steering box out. A few
degrees on the steering wheel is no biggie for a front end alignment to
handle. You can't hardly get it back together wrong, especially if you mark
(scribe, marker, etc) everything as you pull it apart.... it's almost goof
proof (and I need that)!

That'd be great, except for that pesky "Real" job I have. then again,
it's not paying what I had envisioned an engineering degree would get me.
So, tempt me. What's involved, what's required? Start with what, do what
to it, end up with what? Sells to whom, for how much, and how many per
year?

I have about 6 toronados on hand. Pretty limited supply.

Great photos Nate! I'll add Chuck's Toro hub photo to the web site. Did
you find the link to your rig?

On second thought, maybe Tom is finally designing that GMC slide out,
after all it was just a " piece of cake ", was what he said, I think.
I better get to bed before some one shoots me,

Claude: This must have been before I joined. Is this a slide out as in the wall slides out?

I got busy and dropped the ball on these ARB lockers ..... but I'm
interested in either a locker or an ABS system capable of the locking
function.

Don: can you give me some background on this. The discussion of this was probably before my time.

Oops. I should have read a little further before hitting the send button. I'm interested. Any guesstimate of the cost?

Henry,
Remind them that we don't need the compressor which is usually part of
their system, as we already have compressed air at hand. Hopefully bring
that down a little.

Emery,
Was it much to install the Caspro Anti-knock unit? What all was involved?
Did you have a HEI (IE. late model) distributor? Looks easy but you never
know sometimes...

Nate '75GB (getting chilly in) Omaha

>

It was relatively easy to install the unit. I mounted the electronic box on
the left (driver's side) rear lip of the motor box. There is an aluminum
angle just below the motor cover. I used two screws in the flange of the
sensor unit. The face of it faces forward and is hangs vertically from the
alum. angle.

The knock detector was mounted at the rear of the head on the left side of
the engine. There is a ground wire that you run to the engine and there is a
power wire that can be run to the ign. terminal on the distributor. The
hookup is different for the HEI ignition and the standard ignition. For the
HEI you cut one of the leads that leave the distributor. I put a male
connector and a female connector on the two cut ends so that I could easily
take out the knock sensor and restore the original ignition if I needed to.
The last two leads from the system go the these cut distributor leads. This
puts them in series with the distributor so that the system can
electronically delay the spark timing when it detects a knock. You have to
adjust it by turning a screw (variable resistor?) in the box until you
actually hear a knock when going up a hill. The system must hear a knock or
two before it will actuate. One reason that I put the system on is that I
don't hear the pinging. My wife does hear well in that range and she was
always telling me that the engine was pinging. Now she will tell me that it
pinged a couple of times and stopped. This shows that the unit is working.

I advanced the timing (with dist. vacuum advance unhooked and plugged) to 12
deg BTDC instead of the standard 8 degrees. This gives me better performance
on the level roads and the Caspro system will back it down if I hit hills or
if I have a lower grade gasoline. I have been burning regular. Sometimes it
86 - 87 octane.

Let me know if you have more questions.

One more question. Does the unit say how far it can retard the timing?
I mean how many degrees can it back it off.

Gene,
I think my problem is just plain poor QA on the rebuilt box. It worked
flawlessly at first when I put the first 100 miles on it. BIG difference, no
bout a doubt it! When I got the coach back from Jim it was bad. 1500 miles
made that much difference. I flush the sytem twice and added a filter to
boot so I know it's not contaminates. Jim didn't notice it at first but by
the time he got to FC he sure did!
I will be swapping mine probably this spring at the rate I'm going. Hope
they get a good batch then. Need to work on winterizing which I am doing
now...

Arch,
Since I now have the Caspro engine I too had the "Dog House" Blues since I
have the high rise manifold. Jim just added a two by four rim to my hatch.
Not the best but got him to FC. It was noisy! I looked at K&N and decided
that the noise level would be way to high with an open element air filter
howling away at my feet.
I talked to Chuck Kokesh. He had an old hatch that he added a small dog
house to and upholstered it with carpet to match his coach. He used a
Cadillac 500 cu. in. air cleaner that he moved the breather tube down on so
it exits just behind the Alt. He hooked a hose to it to suck fresh air out
the grill and move the noise away. I got it from him. It uses a smaller
element (1" shorter and about 12" in dia. FRAM CA325, IIRC). Dog house is
pretty small (2" high and about 12"x14"). Still a pain but not as bad.
Atleast I can walk around or over it w/o stepping up so high.
I think if I had to do it again I would find a stock manifold and leave
that baby flat as a pancake. I decided I hate dog houses! But thats just my
opinion so take it for what it's worth.

>From what I learned from both on and off list you are much better off
with the new manifold. I am going to play with this for a while and
see where I end up. Right now I think I will order the new manifold
in the morning. Maybe I can just do a cat house.
