Henry,
You "had problems with an International Traveler?" I almost forgot about the one I
had. I tend to try to forget bad things. I bought a 1978 International Traveler
brand new. It was remarkable for being the first vehicle that I ever bought that
cost more then $10,000 and it was also the sorriest piece of automotive %$## that I
ever had.
Before it was 3 years old and with less then 40,000 miles the entire rear body
section by the tail lights rusted out on both sides. The holes were so big that
one of the tail lights actually fell out while I was driving. It just hung there
by its wires. Later IH tried to fix the negative publicity by having a 100,000
mile rust out warranty but that was too late for me. I also had to replace the
transmission shift cable at least twice, the electronic ignition module and I had
to replace all the U joints in the front and rear drive shafts. The exhaust system
also had to be replaced and all this before 40,000 miles and 3 years. There other
problems, but it would take to long to list them.
Compared to that thing, the GMC is very very reliable and never needs work like the
Traveler did. I've never had a vehicle as lame as the Traveler in my life. How
was yours? I bet IH lost their a## on those, I know I did. I guess the short
Scout wasn't as bad.
In contrast I have a 1996 Ford Explorer that now has 120,000 miles (closing in fast
on the GMC's 140,000) and I have basically done nothing to it except change the
oil, tires and brakes. I did replace the spark plugs last week. What a difference
and no rust!
