Upper cylider lubricant

Does any one have any info or experience with upper cylinder lubricant?
I seem to remember small quantities should be added on fill ups?
Will it help? What brand(s) will be the best? Any info is appreciated.

Hi Jerry-

Theres lots of brands, they're all a little different. When I was a kid,
the gunsmith I apprenticed to used to make his own 'top oil'. His formula
was a big can of GM Engine Oil Supplement added to about a gallon of diesel
fuel, and shaken well in a big plastic jug until mixed thouroughly. This
produced a gallon of top oil for very low cost, and probably was as good as
most proprietary blends. He would add about 4 ounces to every ten gallons
gasoline. Watch out that you use a jug for this mixing operation that does
not dissolve from exposure to diesel fuel, might want to use a little red
gas can etc instead.

It was his view that top oil was a good aid to prevent sticking piston
rings and keep valve guides in good shape, as well as minimizing seat wear.
I am not convinced it makes any difference, but most of my engines leak
enough oil down the valve guides to pretty adequately lubricate everything
anyhow. ;-)

I would see little harm in using his formula, and its a cheap way to avail
yourself of whatever advantages may accrue from top oil. Using a very small
amount of top oil should not effect octane enough to be a problem, but if
you overdo it, you may get smoking. GM EOS does have some nice moly additives.

Being an ex-Wynn's salesman, I use Wynn's Supreme as an oil additive with each oil
change. If I come across sticky valves, Wynn's Tune Up will free up those in
about12 min at fast idle. If a coach has been setting for a long time, pull the
plugs, squirt a little Supreme into each cylindar, let set for awaile (this gives
lub to otherwise dry walls and rings) and start. If you've been using Supreme all
along, you don't need to do the plug thing.

You've previously mentioned some good remarks on Wynnn's and I've
always heard good comments on Wynn's.

can someone please tell me where I can buy wynn's
products -- seems that they are no longer sold at a
retail level. I have tried all the automotive type
stores here in the Daytona area.

You probably have a local distributor, but try 1-800-645-8101(Wynn's
Hq). They can direct you to the Local Dist. If there isn't a local
dist., contact me back. The local guy here in Maryland will sell me
what ever I want - even though I haven't worked there for more than 11
years. I'll be in Daytona the last weekend of April, setting up a show,
but I don't have the name of the hotel handy.

Please excuse an answer to a question from over a month ago, but I thought
someone else would answer. I think that upper cylinder lub is a thing of the
past. If you install a bottle of Wynn's Supreme with each oil change, that
will do more than any upper cyl lub ever did. (Wynn"s, 1-800-645-8101 for your
local Dist.)
