A couple of folks had expressed interest in my Onan oil pan dilemna, so
thought I'd update the list.
I have a good friend who is a professional welder/fabricator; I took the
motorhome to him expecting to have him tack weld the bung back into the pan;
it evidently was only pressed in from the factory and had come out when I
attempted to unscrew the plug to drain the oil.
He slid under the Onan on a creeper and told me that if I'd remove the
muffler (very easy job) he could go all the way around the bung with his
wire gun. By welding in short bursts with some cool-down time between, I
don't believe there was any oil burned in the pan to speak of. Never a wisp
of smoke. Heck, the paint on the pan was hardly scorched. Now I KNOW it
won't come out again. I mixed up some Devcon (similar to JB weld) and filled
the weld and the radius for cosmetics and to be sure that any pinholes in
the weld wouldn't seep---filled 'er up with Mobil One and not a drop. Put
the new oil pressure sender and filter in, fired her off, and---guess what:
it runs great and doesn't shut off like it did. I'm a happy camper now.
What was the last word on the Onan parts buy that was being organized a
coupla weeks ago? The little shop that I visited here charged me $7.95 for
the filter; the oil pressure sender was less than that. Are these good
prices? Frankly, from what I'd read, I was expecting more.
