Transmission spilling fluid like Exxon Valdez

Hi,

Came to visit our coach in Virginia for three week trip to New Orleans, and found out that, when warmed up after about 5-10 minutes, the transmission fluid leaves the transmission near the top of the bell housing.

Question: is the transmission toast, and if yes, how long does it take to get a replacement to Charlottesville, VA, and how long does it take a capable mechanic with or without a lift to replace the transmission.

Sounds like it is overfilled. Find a level (more or less) spot, crawl under
the coach after running it for 10 minutes, and where the vacuum hose
attaches to the transmission case you will find the modulator. Take out the
one bolt securing the modulator to the transmission, and pull the modulator
out with your hands. Have a drip pan capable of holding several quarts of
fluid directly under the modulator when you do this. IF IT HAS BEEN
OVERFILLED, FLUID WILL COME OUT. IF ONLY A TINY BIT OF FLUID COMES OUT, YOU
HAVE A PROBLEM. CALL MANNY TRAVEO, and ask him what is next.

Pere,

If it is inside the bellhousing, there are a couple of seals is might be.
If it is outside, it could just be the vent. What I am not sure why this would happen now.

Oh, and it is reported to take Manny about 45 minutes without a lift. I have no idea how long it would take a normal human.....

Flat rate manual says 6 hours, out the bottom. Some shops take a bit
longer, some less.

If wrong filter or bad O ring situation it may be ingesting air. The pump whips up the fluid turning it pink from red with air micro bubbles. This
drastically increase the volume of the fluid/air mix and causes top over usually via vent. A bad seal would leak all the time. Start by pulling pan
and assesing the filter (.075 tube) and correct O ring placement. Refill it checking level running in park to just below full hot mark.

I couldn't detect any fluid on the dip stick, before adding a quart at a time to it.

Thanks for the heads-up re Manny's time, which I think is amazing.

Will keep you guys posted as to what happens.

Most people are down for a week with a blown tranny. By the time it gets removed, issues fixed and re-installed it takes time. you are ahead of
the game having a problem on a monday and not a friday.

hardest part is finding the right shop to deal with the problem correctly. our Midwest club is working at having a tranny ready to go, to lessen the
downtime, but getting it hauled to where it is needed still takes time.

I think last summer, someone had a tranny swapped and back on the road in just a couple days. but that is because there happened to be a replacement
tranny in the area ready to go.

I use to have a spare Manny trany in stock here but someone needed it in Knoxville, so I delivered to them. The spare never got restocked. If you
are going to stock one, be sure that you keep stored where the temperature is constant year round. Otherwise in one year you will accumulate enough
moisture to cause enough internal rust to make the trany unusable. Sorry but I do not have the spare any more. I need to get Manny to make us
another one for stock near Chicago.

As far as how much labor it takes, I pulled mine in 1.5 hours and reinstalled it in 2.5 hours working on the floor with a floor jack. I saw Manny do
it at a rally in under 3 hours. It makes a difference when you know what your are doing. Jim's book rate of 6 hours sounds about right.

When we find kinked trans lines and chipped flex plates, etc more time is
required.
At our shop we see considerable amount of these issues, even poor starter
cables.
Majority of owners have never been under it to see all the previous work
done that slowed down the R&R of any part.
That is why New Car Dealers can do things close to flat rate.
