Transmission Problem

A little over a week ago I was towed home from a trip (thanks to a Landol !!)
After all the In chassis diagnostics ( visual, fluid, Pressures, etc.) All showed acceptable or normal, The tranny needed to come out for further
diagnostics.

Today WE dropped the transmission and put it on the bench for further the needed investigation. ( A THOUSAND Canadian THANK YOUs to Don Blackwell for
the very Skillful and Effective Help!)

So far the main Problem has shown up and that is: the splines in the "Direct" Clutch Drum have been "Torn out" . Much like they were soft.

Metal Slivers are the only remains of those splines in the hub. The splines on the Gear Train input shaft (of the chain drive) looked fine
however. (The full Chain Drive Assembly is also in good shape)

I am curious as to what would have caused that stripping out.

I've been told that drum is Cast Iron and Performance Transmissions change it out to Steel. Which Makes it a known weakness. And Hopefully that's the
only thing wrong. All metal was contained in that area between the splines of the Input shaft, and nothing else has been circulating. ( fluid is
clean)

My mind has been tumultuously Running if I should Fix it and move on, or disassemble the rest of the gear train to investigate further. I suspect
the rest of the gear train is OK. Anyone have any experience with this as being common or actual problem.

Time to have some consultations in process! I'm not a transmission pro.

Hmmm?

Regards
John

John i'm not familiar with your failure but for what its worth, and your there anyways personally i would take the rest of the trans apart...clean and
inspect then replace all seals/orings...if not to check for further contamination of components but piece of mind.

Just remember that not all fragments will end up in the oil...you may find filings in the clutch discs, trapped in the valve body etc....by taking it
apart and cleaning, inspecting you will know for sure...boy would i be p*ssed if i didnt check, got it back together, only to not have it shift from
on gear to the next and have to take it all back apart again!!

As for the spline failure i would talk to Manny....he is the "guy" when it comes to this trany [there may be others, sorry but i dont know them].
JMHO.

What Rich said... take it apart the rest of the way and ensure it's solid, put it back together. I'm gonna bet there's slop in the output shaft which
allwoed the shaft to go a bit sideways under load and eventually broke the teeth off the gear. But, ask Manny, he's the guru.

John,
I haven't had any issues with the splines in the direct drum but I have had
several with the forward drum splines
The splines in the direct drum engage the sun tube so check the bushings in
the sun tube.
The forward drum splines ingage the sprocket shaft. For me the cause was on
the other end of the main shaft.
The bushing in the output gear was thrashed.from the pinion gear in the
final drive.

I had the exact same failure last fall returning from the Mansfield rally. It is flat land country there and I was running at 55 with cruise set. It
just quit. I feel is was a previous even that just finally let loose. Trans was rebuilt by Manny 10 years before that and when we disassembled it
found absolutely nothing worn or broken. We cleaned and reassembled it with all of the same parts except the broken / stripped one.
