The automatic hubs have a tendency to lock if there is any backwards
motion in the toad. Doesn't take much, just roll backwards at a stop
sign or light and they lock. You can replace the auto hubs with manual
hubs for under a $100 dollars, JC Whitney has them for $87 for a set of
2 (PN 73EL7577B) Made by Superwinch. Both the 5 speed and automatic
tranny can be towed.

Just to confuse the issue, my neighbor pulled his '89 Accord automatic
behind his SOB with 4 wheels down for more than 30,000 miles with no
ploblem. Just lucky?

After reading about Toads.....I have the following question(s).....

I have a 87 Honda Civic DX 5 speed standard transmission 2 door.
It would be a perfect toad except........

In the owners manual it says......not to tow it over 35 miles and
keep the speed below about 55. No other explanation.

I know you shouldn't tow a automatic transmission but what about
a standard like mine????

I have ask my local Honda dealer about it and he said I shouldn't
tow it but couldn't tell me why! It doesn't give me a lot of confidence
in them.

Anybody know for sure about towing a standard Honda?

The statement I made about most being towable is subject to year of vehicle.
I believe, after 90 or 91 this is the case. IMO, if the owners manual says
not to it probably is a good idea to follow that advice. I know newer
accords and civics can be towed no problem. Darren

According to Honda's Customer Support Center ( if that's not the name it
was similar ), a '90 Accord LX automatic can be towed by simply observing
one simple rule:

Start the engine
Place it in Drive
Place it in Neutral
Turn off the ignition
Let 'er rip...

IOW, do NOT place it in Reverse then Neutral!

I don't know about the DX5 but I have many friends who tow stick shift
Hondas at highway speeds and have for years without grief. The problem
is, Honda hasn't performed any testing and for liability reasons takes
the easy (CYA) approach.

It pulls like a dream and all you have to do is kick it into neutral and

unlock the steering column.
Only drawback if any is no A/C in the bug. May add that some day.

My first thought was a VW. In fact I looked for a while to find one in
good shape and gave up. Most have been through the mill or had the body
modified so they look even uglier (my opinion) than when they came from
the factory. I settled on an 1,850 lb Metro for a couple of reasons.
First, I was spending $240 -$260 a month for gas in my truck. Secondly,
I was wearing out my truck commuting & not really using it for a truck.
I got the Metro for $50 over invoice, typical for this area. The
payments are $160/month and I'm putting in 32 gallons of gas/month to
drive it. The car is virtually free at this point. It gets 43 mpg, has
AC, no guts and I tinted the windows so no one knows it's me driving
it. BTW, I can't even tell if I'm towing it or not it's so light. No
toad brakes required and it was a snap to make towing adapters for the
low-buck Roadmaster tow bar. Also, GM says there are no towing
restrictions on it.
Al, I did take your advice and hook up the Metro lights using diodes to
prevent feedback.

My 79 year old mother has one in her garage in Michigan which she
bought new. Canary yellow. It is in immaculate shape. She starts
it up once or twice a year. I doubt that it has 40,000 miles on it.
I've tried to get her to sell it to me but she won't part with it.
She drives a Ford and just never takes the VW out. In fact, it
hasn't been licensed for years.

I suppose some day my sister and I will argue over who gets it.

There must be a few more around like this one but I haven't found one yet!

Those are treasures! I was very fortunate to find a 1970 Chevelle like
that. The lady who owned it had passed away and her son didn't want
anything to do with the car. When she first came to this country from
Russia in 1970 she was 59 years old and it was her first (and last )
automobile. I bought it at the 59,000 mile mark. It had been sitting
in a garage for 12 years under a cover. That was 2 years ago and I
still have it.
There are stories like this all over and I bet some of the netters
could kick in a few.
