While researching another project - I ran across this very
interesting device from --> www.smartire.com

This system monitors pressure and temperature -- from INSIDE
each of the tires on a vehicle.

The xmitter in mounted around the inside circumference of the
wheel rim and consist of the following:
. Pressure and temperature Transducer
. centrifugal switch (activates the unit - saves battery)
. radio xmitter (433 mhz)
. lithium battery (avg life --7 years)

The dash mounted display unit:
. Programmable for alarms and alerts
. Displays REQUIRED PRESSURE / ACTUAL PRESSURE /PRESSURE
STATUS / TEMP for each tire

These units are available at Sears and Discount Tires for about
$500 for a 6 wheel RV system.

BUT - I understand that if enough of us in the GMC community are
interested that the price could be less the $250 -- if there are
sufficiant orders.

NO - I have no vested interest in this company -- I'm just
interested in there device --

Cheap at twice the price if it saves running one tire flat.
It's the alarm feature that'll make it worth it... showing the tire pressure
is just a nice add-on.

Many tire events start out with a loss of air less rapid than a blowout and
and a 30 second, or even a 10 second advantage could save a lot of grief. It
certainly would've saved the scar my rig is showing :-)

The cheapest and best insurance you can buy is good quality E rated all
steel 10 ply tires. I cannot see where a catastrophic failure could be
avoided with these devices. Fact is that when Cinnabar did their study on
tires, they found a very high incidence of low pressure in the tires caused
by 1) not checking them at all and 2) using a cheap tire gauge that was
inaccurate.

At $500 too much for my blod but at under $250 keep me posted. If price

I'm in for 250-ish, especially if it's within 6 weeks or so as that's when
I'll be changing my Alcoas ( I hope ). Even though I have the Tire Sentry
I'm thinking that knowing temp and actual pressure may have some additional
value, as in a stuck brake or overheating bearing may transfer some of that
heat to the rim and hence to the sensor.

At the possible $250 for a six wheel system, the sensors can't be too
expensive. What if we asked them to include two additional sensors and
mounted them on the front wheel someplace where the heat of an
overheating front wheel bearing would reach faster than the rim of the
wheel. I not a thermodynaticist, but I'm sure we've got one on the net.
Maybe the rim on an alcoa is not too far away thermodynatically from the
bearings and then again maybe not.

Did your Dad have any clues before, during, after... his event happened?

Wonder if the big boys (Michelin etc.) as Tom suggested, would be
interested NOW... in our collective data if we were capturing it before,
during, and after, explosive decompression... as we could call it.

Remember how interested they were in getting the tires back (wasn't it
the failed one and the still good one). That could save a bunch of
dollars for them at the rates their own lab guys have to charge and all
the equipment they have to order. And with Heinz's already demonstrated
ability to allow several of us, maybe many of us, to send excell-ready
data to them... Heck they ought to be paying us to collect the data, and
provide the best and roundest and freshest Michelins culled for us right
at the plant. Then we would not need no stinking truing. I think we
could pay the UPS fees, it seems like the least we could do, if they were
going to supply the tires.

I hate to say it, but I think we could work a deal with someone that
would save us some money, save them a bunch of money, and get them some
data that they would probably never see otherwise.

You know MIT did something like this and got a bunch of companies to
contribute equipment, supplies, and or money, in return for sharing
access to the data. Some of the companies joined up just to see if the
data was any different than the data they already had, and/or to know
what their competitors were now learning from the data.

See my other post for "noise" etc. Things were real hot when the
bearing failed, and I have no doubt that, if there were an effective way
to monitor hub temperature, it probably would have saved the hub and
knuckle. It probably didn't start making a lot of noise until all the
rollers were ejected and it would have been plenty hot by then.

Interesting comments, but I think he may be more than a little off-base
as, among other things, the inflation recommendations are "cold" numbers
with allowances made for heating.

Is the "two tires in 3,000 miles" experience with the GMC or an SOB?
And just so Tom doesn't have to ask, where they all steel radials or
steel belted with poly body plies?

BTW, I would never shoot the messenger - you run out of messengers
quickly that way.

Good job messenger but what was the rest of the story. Was the coach loaded
correctly and the tires the recommended ones for the coach. Were they E
rated or E rated all steel. Maybe 70PSI was underinflated for this coach.
