That's part of the problem. A lot of this sounds good on the surface,
but when you actually look at the parts involved and start to think
about it, it all begins to look a little absurb - just like the ol' JATO
Impala urban legend.
Case in point and this is my last post on this subject. The converter,
flex plate, and crank output flange are all bolted together, nearly in
one plane. Normal operating hydraulic pressure(generated by the
transmission pump) is applied to the thrust bear thru this assembly.
Now, the tricky part - how does converter "ballooning" apply additional
force to the thrust bearing? Isaac Newton claims every action generates
an opposite reaction. Until the converter finds something to push
against, it can't apply any additional pressure on the thrust bearing.
Even if the front face "balloons out to hit the crank flange, that only
increases the tension on the converter mounting bolts and may damage the
face of the stator, but that's it. Until the convert expands far enough
to either bottom out in the transmission pump or hit the transmission
case, it can't push back on the thrust bearing, and either of those
events would case more damage to the transmission than the thrust
bearing.
