that torque converter "ballooning" is a rare....
"ballooning" was being used as an excuse to cover sloppy engine building

Torque converter ballooning in the GMC application is a MYTH!

Your words should indeed be the last ones on this subject Patrick!
Bullseye! Three rounds fired, target destroyed, bore clear, no
casualties!

Well Tom,

Why don't you explain to all of us why the original torque converters
didn't eat crankshafts back in 1973?

We're waiting with great anticipation.

Life's a real trip!

Are we going to start slinging mud again. Sound's like a bunch of little
boy's that can't get along in the sand box. I know mind your own business
but all this bickering is getting tiring. I know I can delete but this
shouldn't be necessary to have to delete almost every e-mail. And I know
some may not speak to me again but I guess that is the price I will pay.
Too bad.

Wrong again Tom. Once again, why didn't the original torque converters
tear up crankshafts?

This is the crux of the entire issue. I've got a simple rule. Whenever
someone tells me to "fix" something - I ask if it was "broken" to begin
with. I've had a lot of training in Failure Analysis and the first
thing you do is eliminate things are not factors. If A + B = C and A +
B + D = C, then D is not a factor. If the OEM torque converters didn't
do this to the original engines, but they are doing it to rebuilt
engines, guess where the problem is.

Prove me wrong - I'd enjoy it, believe me.

Tom,

The evidence is all around you. How many netters here have spoken up in
the last couple days about many "trouble free miles" they've gotten out
of their coaches. This doesn't become a problem until you rebuild the
engine.

Well, Marlene I apologize if we're not the model of decorum, but this
ain't no tea party. From where I sit, we've all been darn
polite(oops - I swore). There's been no name-calling and precious
little profanity.

I guess we'll have to try harder...

All in jest,
Patrick

That's part of the problem. A lot of this sounds good on the surface,
but when you actually look at the parts involved and start to think
about it, it all begins to look a little absurb - just like the ol' JATO
Impala urban legend.

Case in point and this is my last post on this subject. The converter,
flex plate, and crank output flange are all bolted together, nearly in
one plane. Normal operating hydraulic pressure(generated by the
transmission pump) is applied to the thrust bear thru this assembly.
Now, the tricky part - how does converter "ballooning" apply additional
force to the thrust bearing? Isaac Newton claims every action generates
an opposite reaction. Until the converter finds something to push
against, it can't apply any additional pressure on the thrust bearing.
Even if the front face "balloons out to hit the crank flange, that only
increases the tension on the converter mounting bolts and may damage the
face of the stator, but that's it. Until the convert expands far enough
to either bottom out in the transmission pump or hit the transmission
case, it can't push back on the thrust bearing, and either of those
events would case more damage to the transmission than the thrust
bearing.

If you haven't followed the link provided by Terry Doukas yet, you
definitely should. It's
http://www.atra-gears.com/crankshaft/

Be inquiring. Think about this stuff.

Later,
Patrick
