stupid generator

Seriously thinking about pulling my Oman 4K and converting to storage as we don’t use it either.

I would offer
To help. But I have a really bad track record when it comes to keeping generators working.

I can usually get them running, but they will fail you when needed. I am putting the hitch carrier and my backup generator(that has failed me too)
On for this weekend trip.

Can you check the voltage?? Onans like clean voltage to run well. Maybe slip
Rings??

I'd be looking into a float problem in the carb. Lots of smoke = running rich.. and if you haven't moved the main jet adjustment then a float/needle
not closing correctly is about the only explanation. If I didn't find the problem in the carb then I'd look into ignition (dirty points, fouled plug,
etc).

Yeah probably carb, maybe choke, I'll check that before I remove it with some C4.
Probably not points since it's an Emerald not a original Onan

I just see all that storage space and weight and wonder why I'm hauling that boat anchor around

A working generator can really be helpful if

You lose your alternator but want to continue to drive
Your cab ac malfunctions, it’s hot out and you would like to continue to
drive.
Your dc/propane/ac fridge malfunctions and will only work on ac mid trip.

I’m sure there are other compelling reasons.

cappuccino when we did not have hook-ups.

Great to fire up the microwave,roof a/c.

I've got a "good spare tire" around my waist...

And I'm usually the one that fires up the generator to run the rooftop ac and microwave...

Besides the multiple problems that I have encountered with my original 6k Onan, the one that resisted rebuilding of the carb, jet adjustment etc. was
a terrible hunting rpm problem. Just for the heck of it, I sprayed carb cleaner on the carb while the unit was running and immediately the rpm
smoothed out. Found that the axle for the throttle leaves was so loose in the carb body that air was coming in through the gap throwing off the fuel
air mixture. Didn't have an immediate way of rebushing this but found a substitute carb on Ebay with almost the same manufactures number, installed
it and the Onan runs like new.
 
We supply rebuilt Onan carbs, not a one with a new kit only as that does
not address the worn parts.

Update,
It looks like the float isn't shutting off the fuel so it's overfilling the bowl and running really rich.
If I pull the pump fuse it runs better until it empties the bowl.
Carb rebuild kit on the way.

Maybe I'll keep it 😋
