Steering Problems

On my first trip out the bracket that holds the front carrier for the cv
shaft let go and hit the oil filter. I wasn't worried about the 6 kids
and 5 adults on board. I thought I had lost everything. Ed Osburn
reinstalled the bracket with locktite and off I went. My wheel shimmy
was gone, but after 40 miles of smooth sailing I started to experience
some thumping above 35. Oh no, here we go again. Turns out one of the
needles disenegrated in the bearing in the carrier. Ed had a used one
and I have had nothing but smoothness since. Now if I can just get the
leak at the rear main seal to go away. Arch, maybe we should try
prayer. If it worked for cancer, why not cure an oil leak.

Have all of the tires and rims been checked? these are the same symptoms
that I had when a belt was starting to self destruct. the tire started to
split along the middle of the tread. It shook more as the speed increased
and could be felt even at low speed.

Jerry, this white-knuckle handling sounded like my coach until I replaced
all the shocks with KYBs. . What a dramatic difference!!! (*Especially
the rears!*) No more unpredictable darting all over the road! There is a
source in the GMCnet archives with a fantastic price on a set of 6 KYBs. I
also replaced the front sway bar bushings and end links with polyurethane
ones, but with much less seat of the pants improvement in handling. My 2
cents.

As always, best regards.

I would check the ball joints. I had a 82 Dodge Ram that
would act like that when I hit a bump in the road. I
let it go a couple weeks, Driving down 59 in Pontiac,Mi
it broke, Ran across two lanes of oncoming traffic and
into a ditch..BUMMER! Lost total control. Check the ball
joint, And I wouldnt drive on it till it was checked!
