I would like to do that. The projector has been at Jim Bounds shop for
quite a while. He thought he could rewire the rodent damage but couldn't
manage it without a schematic. The only other solution would be to copy
them in VHS. The problem here is getting audio in synch with the film.
The tapes are rather odd; they are on 35mm film strips with a regular
audio cassette tape combined in a special cartridge. Bill Bryant has been
working to convert another film cartridge type to VHS and has experienced
difficulty.

If some club wants to come forward and underwrite the conversion costs (I
have no idea at this point what they would be) I would be willing to
share the media with them.

might be a good public relations effort. They have more funds than we do,
and they might still have a good machine to work with.

Hi Wayne and other interested parties!

I understand GM was not very receptive to the suggeestion they should
participate in the 25th Anniversary Celebration that Ralph Luby was
planning. I heard the response to the request was, "We don't make
motorhomes anymore."

This is probably 4th or 5th hand info and I suppose the person Luby's
people talked to probably wasn't born in 1973 so........ If we had a
solid GM P.R. person to contact it would be a good first step.

filmstrips on VHS tape. If anybody
gets them converted I would be glad to pay
for my personal copy of the tape(s).

If we got 50 people combined with the
local clubs to buy a copy do you think
we could convert the filmstrips and sell
tapes for around $25.00 each?

Is anyone else interested in getting a copy?

Real Audio makes a software editing package that may work to put these onto
a CD or perhaps a web page. It is a slide show package with music and/or
narration. It is designed to put slide shows on the internet but I presume
it creates a file or files that could be downloaded or sent out by CD.

person's home computers and reporting back to 'hearquarters' what
was contained on hard-drives that had downloaded un-Real Audio

I have transferred film to tape when I worked in broadcast TV (before I
became retarded). Since I no longer enjoy that employment, I cannot
perform such a service noq. However, there are several facilities in
this area where I believe I could still have this done. Price? I would
have to check. I would need more particulars about the films.

As for dupes of this "master tape", I have the facility for making VHS &
Super-VHS dupes. Cost would be approx. $15 (regardless of quantity) plus
shipping, which would be about $2.50 each.

MOST IMPORTANT...................Copyright would have to be cleared
first.

When I taught my graduate class in management of technology, I used realaudio.
They provided a free download of their software, and some 13 million people took
advantage of it. Realaudio learned what music they listened to, where they
stored it on their drive, how much they had stored, and what software(equip)
they used to play it. After the truth came out they "apologized" and made a
patch to their system to delete the info. Talk about "big brother"... my
students were somewhat surprised, but when you register Microsoft 2000, you are
giving up some info as well.

Don't forget Elf Bowling

Might have been the largest Trojan Horse in history. They also say "We are
not using the info" May be , but makes me mad they did not tell us about
this. I am not going to run it on my machine.

Trojan Horse software will carry in a program that reports back to
somewhere else. It will even go through firewalls.

I am wondering if it would make more sense to convert them to web pages and=
=20
post them to the net. Each frame on the film-strip can be scanned on a 35mm=
=20
scanner and saved as a JPEG file. The complete soundtrack can be recorded=
=20
to a wave file. The wave file would be separated into new wave file=20
segments, one for each frame. These wave files would be compressed to MP3=20
format to make them small enough to store on a web page. Each pic would be=
=20
linked to its MP3 sound file. With this approach the person viewing the=20
program would not need proprietary software to watch the show. You could=20
move through the show at your own pace and stop/start anyplace within the=20
show. Another advantage to this approach is that the we could probably fit=
=20
the whole set of programs onto a single CD for those of us who would like=20
to own the whole package.

It is a Trojan Horse that is it reports back to the folks who wrote it. It
will try to log on to the net and if it does not find a link it will run
any way. They say that they do not collect the data, but they are getting
in trouble for not telling the users what they are doing. It seems they
did this to prove the concept of taking data this way. Most agree there
is no harm done to your machine.

I've been following this thread also. Since I have "Elf Bowling" I was
concerned. Because of the "Pretty Park" derivitive of the "Pretty Worm"
virus, (I was sent by a friend) I immediately went ot the McAffee web
site & downloaded the newest vires detection software. Elf Bowling
contains no virus, at least not the one I have.
I have a lot of super 8 footage I took in Viet Nam. Much of it is
brittle so a few years ago I projected it onto a lenticular screen with
the projector bulb on the brighter setting, and recorded it all with a
good VHS camcorder. It came out pretty good and the detail was nearly
on par with the film. Those training films would sure be an asset to
us.

One thing to remember is that videotape has a limited
lifespan...Just sitting on a shelf the video can
deteriorate..I have videotape taken in the early 80s..
I think I see some noise/loss in clarity....
Maybe new tape is made better..I don't know.

Ed, this caveat is a "little off the wall" isn't it?

These films are 25 years old! I doubt that GM or Cinnabar would want to
litigate -for what purpose? Are these fils any differnt than copying GMC
schematics? If I am missing something I trust you will enlighten me.

BTW, I never suggested putting this info on the Web but would share my
films with other GMC clubs without any hint of commercial return.

The fact is that these programs may not contain viruses. That is not the
issue. What was and is happening is that when you connect up to these
systems, they obtain information about you, your habits, and what/where you
like to browse. This information centers around "big brother" listening in
to what you do, where you go, and what you buy. They can build information
about your preferences, your likes/ dislikes and so forth. It is a
question of information security, and if you don't mind, it's ok....I for
one, do worry about what someone is collecting about my habits, my desires,
my visits to the web etc.

That is what is of concern.

Seems to me that I read that old copyright laws were
only good for a limited number of years..then it goes
into the public domain???? Unless the copyright holder
resubmits the copyright....Am I way off in left field
on this????
