I came across an apparently neat product at Home Depot saturday. In
their paint department, they sell a product called "NeutraRust".
According to the label, it is non-toxic. It applies with a paint brush
like latex paint and cleans up with water.
I tried it first on my old water heater enclosure(I'm replacing the tank
with a Demaere stainless steel version) with good results. It dries in
about 15 minutes, but the instructions advise letting it cure for
several days before applying a top coat. It's available in blue, grey
and black. It's turns black when it cures over rust, so I bought the
blue in order to be able to see the color change better. According to
the label, it works as a primer after it sets up, so I'm planning to use
the rustoleum right over it. I'll let everyone know how it holds up.
It's a little pricey at $13/pint, but a little goes a long way.
