Hello GMC Net'ers

After a 13 month absence in Omaha, I have returned to Phoenix where my GMC
has been stored. I am in process of re-doing front end, including servicing
CV joints. I also have removed the right-side output shaft with the
intention of servicing the bearing. After looking at it some more, I'm not
sure what to do: 1) Leave it alone (bearing does not sound dry), 2)
replace the bearing, or 3) press the bearing off and re-pack it. Does
anyone have experience/suggestions with this bearing.

The reason I am on the fence here is that the bearing looks like a sealed
bearing --like a clutch throw-out bearing. If so, servicing probably means
replacing. What is life expectancy if it is a sealed bearing. Will
appreciate any ideas/suggestions.

from reading the mail , talking to the old farts, and local experience,

I think that you will not get a majority vote on the front bearings except
all agree the bearing should be checked at 25,000 plus or minus a few
thousand.

1 To go through all the work of checking you may as well replace
them---but--new bearings have infant mortality -(they are sometimes bad)

2 If the bearings look good why replace them ?? So what is good, and will
they fail soon ??

3 You don't have to pull off the bearings to repack them. See:

But then how about the seals and boots , etc,,

So read all the stuff, and make up your own mind, just let us know what you
do ;>)

Thanks for your response, but I'm not working with the halfshafts that have
the CV joints; rather I'm interested in the bearing on the stub axle shaft
that is suspended on the bracket bolted to the engine block. I don't know
what the recommended maintenance is for the bearing -- I'm leaning toward
'if it's not broken, don't mess with it'. But that could be trouble later
on.

If there were any other responses to my question, they were probably on
digest #497 which my ISP somehow lost. They manage to lose about one out of
three. If I don't get some answers from them soon, I'll be switching
service providers. Anyway, if any of you, other than Gene, responded, I
thank you.

Jerry,

Thanks for the information -- that's just the kind of answer I was looking
for.

I currently live in Mountain Park Ranch (south of Ahwautukee) but have lived
in Tempe/Mesa area since 1968, with the exception of 13 months in Omaha.
