When starting to fix up your GMC that you drug home. There are lots of pla=
ces to start. First is run a compression test. This will give you an idea o=
f the usefulness of the engine. And help in setting up you priorities, and=
budget. Next. I start on the outside first. With the outside looking grea=
t. It's a lot more fun to work on a good looking GMC, then an ugly one. The=
GMC that I just started on. Paint is a little dull. But was all one color.=
Buffing will bring the shine back. So I took the frig vent off. Took it to=
National Coatings & Supply. As they can copy the vent cover electronically=
as to color. Thus they can copy the faded paint to what it is now. Not wha=
t the color was new. Call around to fine someone in your area that can do t=
his. I get a qt made. Then have them put some in a spray can. Start at som=
e corner. Use a tooth pick to paint in the rock chips. Then a small artist =
brush for larger chips. Lightly sand around larger areas. This is were the =
spray can comes in. So while that paint is getting harder. Use a Scotch-Br=
ite pad on all the aluminum window frames. Mask off the window glass, and =
the body that's next to the window frame. Go back to a body shop supplier.=
Get a spray can of SEM brand. Black Trim paint. Or Dupli Color. Trim & B=
umper paint. DO NOT use any general black spray cans. It WILL NOT hold up. =
PROMIS. I made masking templates instead of masking tape. Then use the =
Black Trim spray can on all aluminum window frames. Let all the paint cur f=
or a few weeks. Then it's time to get out the buffer. I like the Maguire li=
ght cut #1 cleaner. But courser cleaners/ rubbing compounds can be used. Tr=
y to keep off the painted black window frames. I now have one side with all=
the paint work done. Looking great. Buffing in two weeks. Now I want to wo=
rk on it. Pulling gas tanks soon. Bob Dunahugh

I have no part of the coach I can remove (well I could pull the engine hatch) with the beige/peach upper half color. How could i get that matched?

Kelly. You can call a Sanels auto parts if there’s one in your area which I think there’s one in Brattleboro and see if there paint rep will come out to and help with the color match. Otherwise you’ll need to bring something to a local auto body shop for them to color match. Unless you have the original paint codes and even then the colors probably won’t match because of the age of the coach the paint is most likely faded.

The fuel door isn't the color you need?

Does your refrigerator vent door match? That is easy to remove.

No, that was painted incorrectly. One thing I would want to fix. They used the bottom color on the bottom and the top and skipped the top color

The only way you’re going to get a proper color match is one of two ways. Either bring a piece of the coach(hood cover, refrigerator vent cover) to a body shop or to the Sanels in Brattleboro,Vermont. Sanels carries Spies/Hecker paint which has been around for a long time and might have your paint code in there index. Or you could call a local autopaint distributor and they can take a picture of your coach using a color camera if they have one and you could get a color code that way. Short of spending a whole bunch of money on your own color indexes those are your options.

Also, you could get a human being with color matching skills to blend up
some samples for you. There are still a few of them out there.

And like Jim said you can get someone to mix the color for you and tint it to the right color and shade. A good body shop should be able to do that.

Do you guys use lacquer paint for touch ups or is there another base that's
better with our original Imron paint.

I found that an Acrylic spray paint worked well. I used Krylon. They had an antique white that matched quite well with the tan color on many GMCs such as my 1977 Kingsley.
However, I haven’t see that color lately. Walmart used to carry it.

You don’t have a signature line showing which motorhome you have or where you live. You might consider doing that.

I will be touching up my Canyonlands in the near future and this post
reminded me to see if there is a "preferred" method of painting/ touching
up. I will need to paint most of the very bottom edge. (rock chips) I
planned on taking it to an automotive paint supplier and having them match
it with their photo tool. I assumed lacquer would be the easiest to blend
in, but wasn't sure.

You will have trouble finding very good color options in lacquer as almost
nobody uses it anymore. It is not compatible with most modern 2k clears and
since it is a thermoplastic it remains chemically sensitive for life. You
will want to select a paint system that your chosen painter uses. Any good
auto painter should be able to bench mix a color for you in his system.
That said, it’s more of a question of if they WANT to. Spot painting is
pretty straight forward if you have a multi color paint job. If you have a
coach that’s all one color the entire panel you are repairing will need to
be refinished if you want a seamless repair.

Ken,

Or, you could always paint the lower edge with a truck bed liner and call it an accent strip.

Kind of like the way Microsoft doesn't fix bugs, they just document it and call it a feature.

I just had some paint mixed to match the gray on my ex-Royale, I brought in a panel and they custom mixed it. It's really really close.
I used PPG Omni MAE Acrylic Enamel with hardner as I didn't feel like messing with the isocyianate clears, too toxic and I didn't want to rig up a fresh air system.

I'm using a foam roller to put on PPG MP high build sandable primer, after a bunch of sanding I spray the color with an HVLP gun .
The foam roller allows a lot of paint to be put down and cleanup is easy! Just throw the roller away. Masking is 1/10 too as there's no overspray from a roller
It does require a little more sanding, but the high build sands easy.

Automotive paint is pretty easy to come by, and the single stage is cheap. not as cheap as latex, but cheaper than good paint LOL

When I bought a "wrong year" Tour Box for my 2000 Harley, I took the bike to a nearby auto body shop. With their computer analysis program, they came up with a four or five ingredient paint combo that EXACTLY matched the rest of my bike. I'm quite sure a COMPETENT body shop in your town can exactly match the existing paint on your coach.

You probably would want to do a good buffing job on your coach first!

That is something I can do this summer!
