"starter bracket had been broken previously and this is probably the
reason.
I haven't figured out how to cure the problem yet, but it will probably
require cubic dollars (new slides? mounts?) knowing the cost of Onan
stuff."

I don't know how your motor mounts look but mine were still intact and
solid.

I dismantled the mounts and inserted sufficient flat washers
(the size will be easy to determine after dismantling,
somewhere about 1/2" diameter) to raise the Onan up off
the floor of the compartment.

Cost must have been all of $1.50. I hope your motor mounts are still
in good enough shape to permit this fix to work.

Good luck

Sometimes they look OK even when they are squashed a bit. I had the same
problem last year. I replaced the two front (drivers side) motor mounts and
it raised the engine a good 1/2" or more. The new mounts are tall and firm.
They get compressed a bit when installed but are firm enough to keep the
motor off the floor of the compartment. The old ones looked OK but where
too soft.
