My daughters house in Salt Lake City had one. It was the first one I had ever looked at, having never lived anywhere where one would work.
It drew air in from the outside, past what can best be described as a wet cardboard element, and blew it into one diffuser in the main hallway.
It worked, and made things more comfortable (if a bit noisy).
About 6 months later when she replaced the furnace, she went to a conventional AC unit.
