I am pro synthetics but have noted several applications where their
use is discouraged by the manufacturer, such as Mercury Marine on their
inboard engines. Being new to the Onan, I was wondering if there are any of
you out their using synthetic oil in it or if it is discouraged. Also, how
often are you changing the oil? Just wondering, walter bright, Delanco NJ.

I'd be interested to know why Mercury Marine discourages the use of
synthetics. I found the following at www.mercurymarine.com:

"Quicksilver 4-Stroke Outboard Oil is recommended. If not available,
4-stroke oil from another outboard manufacturer is acceptable. 4-stroke oils
from other sources are not recommended because they are generally lower in
protective additives than outboard manufacturer's 4-stroke oil."

But couldn't find any mention of oils at all for their inboards.

Mobile 1 is not a synthetic 2 stroke oil that is why. There are synthetic 2
stroke oils and they are very good. If my memory is not entirely shot I
used to use a synthetic called Klotz, a german product. Of course we all
know that germans during the second world war developed synthetic oil.

Tom,

We're talking about 4 strokes. The Mercury Marine reference below is
about 4 stroke outboards and was the only oil reference I found on their
web page. A web search turned up a hornets nest about 2 stroke oils and
Mercury Marine's recommendations. The consensus in that group was that
Mercury was using their service recommendations to sell overpriced
oil. Maybe their stand on 4 strokes is the same sort of effort.
Still would like to hear their side of the story.
