We were headed for a Cascaders Rally on Wednesday when we had a water pump
failure on the road. No spare aboard for a 403, so, called a tow. Guzman
brothers brought the correct wrecker the first time. 2 hour + wait. $360.00 tow
to their yard. They let us spend the night free. Called O'Reilly auto parts
in Hood River, not in stock, but there by 9:30 this morning. Short cab ride
got the pump in my hands. But, I didn't have the right tools with me.
Called, and located 1.7 miles from my location, John's Equipment Repair
4301 Barrett drive, Hood River, Or. They do Auto, Truck, Tractors, Power
Tools, Lawn and Garden, and air cooled engines. In at noon, out at 3:00.
Quality work, they dropped everything else to get us on the road. $310.00,
2 guys, 3 hours, out the door, down the road. Not a bad deal. No issues.

I 'm getting to leave from Newark, CA to Amana , IA Sat. AM.
I hope we will not encounter any major breakdown.
I remember when was several years younger, I could most work on the road
and also use my mind to get it done.
At 76 I make sure my coach is inspected closer and replace questionaable
parts.
We will be driving directly from Amana to Mt Hood , OR.

I am with Jim on the value of inspection of your coach often. We do 7 to 9=
thousand miles a year with our coach. Every fall after the last GMCGL Oct=
ober rally and before the round trip to Tucson the coach goes up on stands =
and I do a very detailed inspection of the engine/transmission/front axles =
and brakes including master cylinder. I flush the brake fluid every 2 year=
s. I check and grease all the zerks in the front steering including the fr=
ont bearing zerks. On the rear I check the units for leakage and every 2 y=
ears the hubs come off and the bearings are check. I check all the subsyst=
ems, potable water including the water heater, black water system, grey wat=
er system and the macerator for leaks and functionality. I walk around at=
and slide under the coach and check for loose stuff and possible leaks. I=
t is a touchy feely things for everything. Since 1998 I have been on the h=
ook only once and that was a torque converter/transmission failure out 20 m=
iles from home. I cannot impress the need to look and inspect and replace =
items on your coach. I have seen many coaches that have received little or=
no maintenance by there owners that aways seem to break down and end up be=
ing towed home or to repair shops. It is much better to find and fix at ho=

Seems like the big 3 items(water pump, alternator, and starter) are always failing on our motorhomes. The only common denomator it that they are all
cheep rebuilt components.......
Seems to me that the best option would be to buy cores of all 3 items and have them rebuilt by a reputable American or Canadian shop. I'm sure the
cost would be double or triple of the autozone rebuilt, but it would still be cheaper than a tow or two....

Always had those parts on my coach plus more then a dozen other necessary parts and the tools to replace them. When I leave home I am usually in the
middle of no place for a fair amount of time.over the many years of travel those spare parts saved the bacon a few times.

Pretty sure Jim has those parts readily available.

I have recently found that a quality Waterpump was a little more difficult to source then I would expect. I know Jim carries good waterpumps.
Waterpumps usually don't like to sit, and unfortunately most of us can't afford the gas to be using the GMC as a daily driver. Same really goes for
alternator and starter. quality rebuilds are pretty easy to come by too. I know I can drop off something in town and have it complete by lunch
where I live on starters and alternators, including the onan starter. I would like to get ahold of a good starter to carry as a spare, because that
can really slow you down. an alternator in my mind is no biggy, because you can usually work around that.

Jimk - I will be seeing you in amana. but keep in mind if you are taking I-94 west to Mt. Hood, I am just off the freeway in St. Cloud. Same goes
to anybody else traveling around, I have power and water at the house.

Actually, let me place this warning out here. It is the result of a personal experience that ended well directly as a result of the effort and
generosity of a Black lister.

In the case that you do not know this, our starters are a Delco 10MT. GM has used these as a standard for decades. BUT, Most (nearly all) bolt to the
block. Ours has a unique nose casting (that is only used with the Hydramatic 425 transmission. That transmission has been out of production for a
little less than 40 years.

Our starter quit.
We were at a music festival in Evart MI. We were about 3 hours from home. Mary had to be at work Monday mid-day.
The tap it worked once, but not enough. I took it down there on the grass. When I got it open, it was clearly not recoverable.

Do you know what Evart is near? ..NOTHING..
This was Sunday afternoon. The local parts store was closed. I started calling in ever expanding circles and got the same response. "Don't have,
but we can have one Monday."
I live not far from a NAPA warehouse. The thought was have son-in-law grab one and bring it to me. Good plan, but they would not have one for three
days....
This is when I started working the Black's list. Don Hart had one on a parts coach and drove about a hundred miles to bring it to me. He stayed
until the coach started.

This is why I carry an operational starter as a spare.

Rebuilding a starter requires no special tools. I did a write up on it if you care. The required parts are about 20$ on Ebay.

I believe everything in the starter is the same except for the nose cone.
So, if you could find a RWD starter and change the nose cone,
you'd be good to go. Actually, on my Cadillac, since it uses a RH starter
for RWD applications, I almost think I could bolt a RWD starter
to the block and go. Hmmmmm.... I may have to check that out.

If we did get a local shop to do it, I'm sure it will not be price
competitive. Get enough people running us down for pricing.
At 76 I do not need to take that crap from those that does not hold a
degree in Bus. Adm and Marketing telling me i dont know crap.
I know All the venders feel the same about these smart ass people.

Since I don't have any cores, and they are specific to our GMC's,I would think who ever has cores, and is in the know for who to use on the rebuilding
could sell them here on the GMC interweb.
I would buy one of each.. and I'm sure outhers would as well.

don't know off-hand how many. And a local one-man shop rebuilder, with 50+
years of experience, who's always had very reasonable prices. It's too
late for Amana, but I could bring several to GMCMI Tallahassee next March
-- IF there's interest.

I've never rebuilt a starter or alternator. It would be a great presentation at a tech session. I would love to learn how to rebuild one, and with
someone babysitting me while rebuilding one, what could possibly go wrong!

Yes, you take one to Mike -- Somewhere -- mine are all spoken for already.
I didn't have as many as I thought -- they were in a pile mixed with a
bunch of A-6 compressors. :-(

I'll check with my local rebuild for more suitable starters -- he's got,
literally, piles of starters.

Emery, the one I'm bringing to Amana for you has already been rebuilt.
