I just got a 1973 26' GMC motorhome from my aunt and uncle yesterday. I
just subscribed to the list and wanted to introduce myself. My name is
Ed
Hatter and I live in Omaha, NE. I looked in the glove box to try to
determine which model it is and did not find anything that looked like a
model number. How do I find this?

I drove it 200 mile home yesterday and it ran great, for a 25 year old
vehicle. Of course, I have never driven anything like this before so I
don't know what it should drive like.

A couple of quick questions to start off. Since this is an Olds drive
train, can I just take it to the local auto mechanic to work on the
engin
and tranny, or do I need to go to an RV dealer? The back end stuff I
assume
I will have to go to the RV dealer? Also, what type of places can you
get
these repainted at? Truck and trailer body shops?

Hi Ed,

The "build" sticker(if it's a GM finished model) will be on the back of
the glove box drawer. Open the drawer and release the stop catch so the
drawer swings all the way down. Once you find the sticker, then you
have to decipher the codes to determine which model you have.

If you want to have a local mechanic work on it, you'll need to find one
that's well versed in the 2nd generation Toronado/Eldorado drive
trains. Join GMCMI and/or a local chapter and there should be a member
in your area which can make a recommendation. Believe me, the local
Olds/GMC Truck dealerships probably won't have a clue as to what you
have.

That's a possibility, and there are a couple of good suggestions in the
archives for shops offering two color paint jobs at a reasonable price.
