New S&J Engine

Jon, if you are speaking to me, the S & J is a 455. Built to my motorhome
specs. About the 10th one so far. The coach it is going into is a 77
Royale.
It has a Howell/EBL tuned for the hot rod engine that I personally
built for a previous owner. It failed by overheating on it's maiden voyage.
Haven't got that engine out yet. Setting up the gantry today. Will know
what happened in a few days.
I will re-tune the EBL to known good bin file when I get to that
point.
If you weren't referring to me, sorry for butting in to your thread.

Jim- question was for george. Looks like he has a fresh engine.

But your info is good too.

When I went to ebl on my s&j. (Had like 800 miles with a carb). I had some tuning issues that Randy was super and helped me with adjusting the BIN.
But I am still not confident it is still 100%. I had issues at colder temps. Easily solved by selecting a different BIN in. The bank.

Tough to really tune it perfect as the time to tune it when the stars and moons aline usually does not match up.

Just hoping I am not tuning a more serious engine issue away. (Unknown vacuum leak).

I just pulled my gmc out of storage about 5 miles away and it fired up and ran fine at 40 degrees outside. At one time it would not leave an
intersection at that scenario without switching tune bank to my "hot rod" BIN that hits aFr around 10 at PE.

So maybe it is learning itself all better. (I have done many VE learns last year).

Jim- you must of mis-read my post. I am thinking I have no choke on my EBL efi system.

John
I have no choke but my EBL is set up to give me a bit richer mixture until the engines warms. I have driven it a lot in cold weather and have had no “choke” problems..

Someone should be able to give you the settings. Right now I have a brace on my right arm for 5 weeks due to shoulder (rotator cuff) surgery so I can’t check my settings right now.

Your temp sensor or other is not working.

Let's go back. WAAAYYY back to the installation of the Holley Throttle
body. When you installed the adapter plate and gaskets supplied with the
kit, did you follow the instructions to the letter? If you did not get that
gasket corner sealed up correctly with the correct sealant, then you are
like a dog chasing it's tail. You will never catch up.
After you insure that is all correct, you need to do one more thing.
Never mind what the "net wags" have to say about this, just humor me. Use
an OLD SCHOOL ribbon feeler gage .007" thick and set the throttle plates so
that you have a firm tug to the ribbon gage with the idle stop screw. Then,
leave the damn thing alone, and let the computer learn to settle the idle
speed by its IAC.
Goes without saying that your O2 sensor needs to be good along with
your coolant temp sensor. You should go into "closed loop" at 173° coolant
temp or above.
Then, if your engine still stumbles on low speed acceleration, you
are too lean. Your AFR should be 12.0 -1 or richer. If it is not, humor an
old man, and make it so.
Then, see where you are.

Randy has helped me work on this situation, and plenty of winlog files sent out, and 6-9 BIN files he has sent me as we "tweaked and tuned it".

the first drive and the first week I had the EBL/EFI running, was when I first had the issue. could not make it around the block. After 1 winlog
file sent to Randy, and him returning a new BIN file an hour later, pretty much solved the issue. The engine takes off like a drag car, but the AFR's
are a little rich. I keep that on Bank1, and I consider that my "emergency BIN" Since then Randy has been working with me to dial it in and has
the coach running very well and we have exchanged winlog files and BIN's many times.

about a month after having the EBL in last spring, we had a miserable cold spring Rally. Sunday morning I had the issue when I went to leave. the
coach fired right up, all seemed go, driving fine through the campground that is maybe a 1/4 mile drive through the campground and out to the exit.I
went to gas it to get out on the highway from the exit of the campground, and the engine died almost instantly when I hit the gas. fired right up,
hit throttle and died. 4-5 times. Went to the ebl tablet, but my kids stole the tablet charger over the weekend and the tablet was dead. tried a
few more times and somehow messing with the gas, and timing my launch, it kicked in and took off and away I went and got to a safe spot to pull over.
in that parking lot, Same deal, hit gas and it croaked. Temp outside was like 33. got tablet to bootup, switched to the "emergency BIN" and
away I went like nothing was wrong. next day the weather was warm and never had an issue all summer.

I ran all last summer/fall with no issues. I have done IAC setting checks multiple times, and even replaced it at first. I have taken propane
torch and tried to check for vacuum leaks around the base. That was when I first installed the EBL- worried I had some issue... never found a
vacuum leak and the IAC seems to be doing what it needs to do. Never had a inconsitant idle rpm, or any issues on idle. Just leaned out on quick
when you 1st hit the throttle.

Keep in mind- Coach runs steller at most all situations, and I have about 3000+ miles on the ebl system now.

it was always at lest 50 degrees or better out when I had my coach out last year, and fast forward to last wednesday, I jumped in, fired it up, and
drove it out of storage and home and it was in the mid 30's. I did not really pay much attention to my EBL, but I had the tablet running, and on the
way home(about 5 miles), I did notice I was on bank 0- 455. the original BIN that came with my EBL that originally could not drive around the block
with.

it is always tough being the working guy to find time to sit and do some more troubleshooting, as the exact same scenario normally never pans out.
I supposed I could get up at 2am when it is in the 30's and try to take the coach out to see what it does.

Jon, Randy is also my GO TO guy. He has been at my place for several days,
and we sorted out the engine (extensively modified) in the coach I am
presently working on.
Through no fault of the EBL/HOWELL setup, when the owner came and
picked up the coach with a brand new extensively modified engine, he left
for home, got about 30 miles up the Interstate, and it severely overheated.
He pulled over, left it on the freeway, and it was towed back to my shop.
It has sat there until now, When I went to start it to drive it into my
shop, no joy. So I used all 6 of my tricks on it, sorted out the electrical
and pinned it down to no fuel. Purged the system of old gas, replaced it
with fresh (no alcohol) fuel, flushed out the lines and filters, blew out
the throttle body, hooked up fuel lines, turned the key to start, and it
started almost instantly.
So, now, it comes out, and a fresh S & J 455 motorhome special is
going in to replace my hot rod engine. Then, it is going to be tail lights
down the road, to a different owner, but that is a long, off subject, story
for another thread.
