In Florida there are multiple classifications, Antique & Authenticated Plates (rev 12/25).
Horseless Carriage: A vehicle manufactured prior to 1916.
Ancient Plates:
Antique Plates: Pre 1945
Antique Vehicle: A vehicle manufactured between 1916 and 1948, retained largely in its original condition.
Authenticated Plates: Pre 1975
Custom Vehicle: A vehicle manufactured after 1948, altered from its original design, and having a
body style not produced by the original manufacturer.
Streets Rod: A vehicle manufactured prior to 1949 or a replica thereof, altered from its original
design.
A “Regular Antique” motor vehicle is defined as an automobile, truck, or motorcycle
manufactured in a model year after 1945 and of the age of 30 years or more after the model
year. The license plate must be renewed annually. The class code for an Antique (regular)
motor vehicle is 95 (automobiles old class code 95, trucks old class code 91). The form HSMV
83045 is not required for a regular antique license plate.
Antique license plates never expire until vehicle is sold.
A “Custom Vehicle” is 25 years of age or older and of a model year after 1948 or was
manufactured to resemble a vehicle that is 25 years of age or older and of a model year after
1948 and has been altered from the manufacturer’s original design or has a body constructed
from non-original materials.
A “Street Rod” is of a model year of 1948 or older or was manufactured after 1948 to resemble a
vehicle of a model year of 1948 or older and has been altered from the manufacturer’s original
design or has a body constructed from non-original materials.
Trooper Steve on Tuesday was asked by Philip, ““I have a 1999 Chevrolet S10 Blazer. Can I get an antique license plate for it (in Florida)?”
To get an antique plate for your car, you have to submit an application to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles by filling out
Form 83045.
But here’s the caveat: in order to qualify for that antique plate,
the vehicle must be at least 30 years old (sorry Philip, your S10 won’t be eligible for another five years).
Years ago, it used to be 20 years or older, but now it’s 30 in Florida.
