The rear bed on my 76 Palm Beach was a full. Standard mattress fits fine.
Our first one was a medium density foam.

It depends on your mattress. I just folded the foam mattress in half and
pushed it to the back. No problems. The new custom mattress was a different
story. I had Montery Mattress Company make a good mattress for me. The
construction includes side steel for the internal frame/springs etc. IN
order to fit, I had them cut the side steel in the middle so mattress will
fold in half.

To get the mattress in the back. I fold it in half with a helper, and put a
strap around the mattress to keep it folder while I slide it to the back.
Once the mattress is i th back, I loosen the strap and the matress unfolds.
Removal of teh mattress is a bit trickier since it has quite a bit of
spring tension when folded. Here's how I do it: slide the strap under the
mattress the long way. Get in the back at the head of the mattress with my
feet under the mattress. Fold teh mattress in half. HAve my helper secure
the strap while I hold the mattress in place. Stand the mattress on its
edge and slide it back out the hallway. This is a bit of work since the
mattress springs are pretty strong.

PS Irene is my helper in this procedure - and she's pretty strong. I
wouldn't recommend the procedure for the timid or physically challenged.
Consider a foam mattress instead if either applies to your situation.

Hi Larry,

The P.O. installed a queen mattress in the rear of our 73 and the headboard
is still intact. I removed it to check flooring, and water tank. It wasn't
to bad to move out lot of twisting and bending, but it came out with no
help. No help on speedo. Hope this helps.

I'll be putting an inflatable mattress back there - cheap, comfortable,
lightweight, adjustable firmness, etc.

Henry, I plan on building the bed as you described.I have studied all your
documentetion and as clear as it appears I still have a few questions. As soon
as I have an opportunity to list these may I impose on you to respond. Thanks.

Don't know yet, but I'm sure a full-size will fit, and a queen-size might
also.

yes, once you take out the dinette, and even the hump in the back floor, you
might want to raise the bed so you can do some under bed storage. Gene fisher
has some info that. I did mine and am extremely happy with it. A standard
mattress will fit. Some use an air mattress, or foam, but I chose to put in a
600 coil innerspring mattress. However, to get it to fit, I had the builder of
the mattress take out the metal bands that wrap the upper and lower part of the
mattress. That way it folds (bends) so you can get it in. A standard version
will fit within the opening even if you leave the two ends under the two
windows in. If you have any questions, look at gene's site, and you can email
me and I can add whatever you need. I did put a storage with air hydralic
lifts.
