Macerator and dumping into toilet?

I have had a macerator ever since I got the plumbing working on my coach. I have always had access to a dump station or at least a sewer cleanout that
served as a dump station. I have never had to dump into a toilet.

But now it appears we may be staying somewhere long enough that we will need to dump, but will not have easy access to a dump station or sewer
cleanout. Our only option will be to dump into a toilet. So what do I need to know about this? How do you dump 30 gallons into a toilet that usually
flushes only a few gallons at a time? Do you shut off the water to the toilet, and hold the flush valve down or what? Also, about how many feet of
hose can a macerator generally pump though? I may need to obtain a longer hose to reach the toilet. I only have about 8 feet of hose now.

I routinely pump my tank to a sewer clean out when I return from a trip. I pump about 125 feet. 75 foot of that is 3/4” garden hose. 50 feet is a 5/8” garden hose.

I have dumped into toilets in the past. You do not flush it. You put the hose in the toilet and then turn on your macerator. The sewage will rise in the toilet and then it will flush itself and you just keep pumping until your tank is empty. The first time you do it you think the toilet will overflow. But it doesn’t.

A 5 gal bucket is your friend - I dump 4 gals at a time via my macerator into the bucket and carry it to the toilet and dump as a normal
flush - no need for turning toilet water off.

Wow- Mike. Some friend. And I thought sticking the hose in the toilet and pumping was a bit disgusting! I can’t imagine myself carrying and dumping eight or nine buckets full of s...!
You should consider just getting another length of hose to reach the toilet. Much easier and faster.

By the way Paul, I have dumped in several different toilets and none of them overflowed. When it gets about 2/3 or 3/4 full they will flush themselves (no water leaves the tank) and your whole holding tank will pump down the toilet. You do not need to use the toilet flush handle until you are done and want to clean the toilet bowl.

I would throgh in one caveat- Dont dump black water treated with any type of antibacterial treatment into a septic system. Or at least, one you own.

One more question about this. Does it matter whether you are going into a pressure-assist flush toilet instead of a gravity flush toilet?
--
Paul Zerkel

Paul,

I suspect that a pressure assisted flush toilet will be little, if any,
better for macerator use than a gravity flush. The pressure assist is
really only effective at the very beginning of the flushing action; any
purging after that is due to siphoning, just as with the gravity flush.
The macerator, with 15-30 gallons of material to pass, will be almost
totally dependent upon siphon action.

Anyone who doesn't really understand how a flush toilet works may find this
interesting (as will anyone who wants to know TOO much about toilets!):

On the subject of toilets, many folks have heard or read that the inventor of the modern flush toilet (using an elevated tank operated by a pull chain) was named Thomas Crapper which has led to "other" uses of the name !

We lived in Germany for several years and there is apparently a law there that each new home constructed MUST have a toilet facility that can be accessed by anybody passing by to use if needed! Our new row rented row-house in Raunheim am Main had such a facility just inside the front door. The door from that small hallway into the main house was the one that was locked. I don't know that it was ever used by anyone, but it was definitely possible that the man who made weekly beer deliveries to us COULD have used it.

We have a washer and dryer in our garage at our cottage. The washer empties into a standpipe that goes to our septic tank. I use that now for dumping
when we are up there with the GMC. I like that better than running the dump hose through the house to the bathroom. It sure beats going to the state
park 10 miles away to dump which we did in the past.

I feel better if I have someone standing by the macerator on/off switch, ready to shut it off if needed, while I observe the pump's discharge in the
garage.

Thanks for the suggestion. The place where we will be at has a washer/dryer in a mudroom, that would probably be easier to access than the bathroom
window.

Agreed - it is rude to carry a smelly tank around for others to put up with.

We have very good results using RidEx. Add about an ounce to the black tank after each pump out.

That (Rid-X) is the ONLY thing I've used in my holding tanks for many
years, and that only rarely. Never have an odor problem. And NEVER allow
any bacteria-killing substance into the tanks.
