Here is a response to a request for a price on a remanufactured 455 CI
engine for my GMC which I sent to Jasper. Thought it might be of use to
some folks.
=====================================================================

Per your request the following information applies:

This engine is going to be remanufactured back to or exceeding
O.E.M.
specifications. It will consist of the remanufactured block, heads,
cam, crank, and
rods. It has a standard set of new internal parts that include:
pistons, rings,
bearings, lifters, valves, valve springs, and timing components.
Included with the
engine will be the oil pump, oil pan, and the timing cover. These are
already installed
on the engine for you.

After the engine is built-up, we then LIVE RUN TEST it at the
factory to make
sure that it is going to be running properly when you receive it. We
actually pour the
fluids in and run it for 1/2 hour to 45 minutes. While it is running we
run checks on
oil pressure, vacuum, and compression. We also check it for any leaks
or noises. This
JASPER complete engine will be backed with a 3 YEAR / 50,000 MILE
WARRANTY. This warranty covers PARTS AND LABOR and is good NATIONWIDE.
The price on your 1974 GMC Motorhome 455cid carb engine is $2434.00
exchange.
If you would like to get this engine on order, or if you have any
further questions
please call my sales department at 1-800-827-7455. Thank you

Is there any Machine work done to the 455; e.g., rods, line boering etc.?
Does this include the oil restrictors, valve rotators etc.? Thanks for more
information! Chuck

Jasper's run in test must be recent. One of our GMC SS members had Golby
install a Jasper and it overheated on the way home. Turned out Jasper had
used head gaskets for a 403ci on the 455ci!

I'm inclined to look for bargains but after 3 decades on this planet I
have learned you get what you pay for. This is not to suggest any of he
rebuilders mentioned in this thread are in any way deficient but as Arch
says the GMC does require a RV cam and there are other differences. On
the other hand I know of one Winterfeldt engine that blew a piston at
100k miles.

My engine (2nd one) is a Mondello engine with oil restrictors and has
over 300k miles on it with a timing chain and valve job about 5 years
ago. It still gets by on a quart of oil every 800-900 miles, still gets me
over 8mpg towing a car and oil pressure still looks good.

The first engine was a stock 403ci and was pulled at 280k miles

I will be looking for an engine soon just to have a backup but the old
girl still goes and goes!

I got back a price from em today. Mine said the same thing 'except' for
price.....

"The price on your 1977 GMC Motorhome 455cid carb engine is $3059.00
exchange."

Reckon that's the difference in freight charges?

Dave,

Did Jasper correct the problem??? We can understand mistake as
long as one is willing to stand behind the product.

When we had our differential and transmission rebuilt, we had to
take it back five times because there was a transmission fluid leak.
After that, the person who did the labor was pointing the finger at
the rebuilder, and visa vers. That is when our patience runs thin.
Had someone else to look at it, and it was the gasket had been tore
during installation. But of course that is another story.

BTW - the reason for the rebuilt was it was what we could afford at
the time.

Well, Les n Des, Jasper did reimburse Golby for the repair but the really
amusing part of he story I left out.

Seems when Golby did the repair they did the same darn thing jasper did,
Yup! They put it together using the wrong head gaskets again! Needless to
say the owner set them straight.
