Intake Manifold & 455 Block

We just removed the Intake Manifold and pan/gasket
from the 455. There is a hole in the front/side of the
block near pan area. Is this normal? I think it might be an oil return
route? I'm just afraid that maybe something caused it to break
there. SAY IT AINT SO! I think the Timing chain is
on the other side of the hole.

Hi Terry,
A friend of mine said he saw the same hole on a 455
he tore down. So Im not going to lose sleep over it.
Decided to remove the heads, Then remove the broken
bolts in house. Where its warm. I'll have a machine
shop check out the heads while I have them off.

While it sure looks suspicious, I believe it is supposed to be there.
Sure looks like a flawed casting though, don't it?

I stared at mine for quite a while before I decided it wasn't going to
cause a problem. At least, I hope not.

A word of caution. If you have a valve job done on the heads, I have been
told that you should use stainless steel valves and bronze valve guides.
This is because we do not have lead in gasoline now and when the heads are
cleaned it removes the residual lead that has acclumated from years past.
That acclumated lead acts as a lubricant for the valve guides.
