Jack, what is the voltage supposed to be?
12VDC? Must not be, as you already have 12v from
a battery you could substitute.

Steve

On the last day of our weeks long outing, our Norcold DE 561 refrig stopped
working. It had worked for the most part on and off all week. It would run
about 24 hours just fine and then it would seem to go through a defrost
cycle in which the temps in side would get up around 45 degrees in the
freezer section.

I would be happy to take the unit in but the nearest factory service center
is 300 miles away. I tried a couple of local guys buy both told me that my
model # does not exist. (think I can do just as well as they can.)

I removed the refrig. The Compressor is getting voltage but only for a
split second and then the power supply shuts down and tries again a min or
so later.

I think either the power supply does not have enough juice to get the
compressor running or the compressor is not working.

Suggestions please?

I have spoken with two tech support people. Both tell me I have to try/buy
a power supply to see if the compressor is working. The lowest quoted price
so far is $395. A bit much I would say. But still cheaper than a new one, If
this is the real problem.

I also have been told if the compressor is seized I need to just go ahead
and replace the unit. Suggestion for GMC Community friendly dealer that will
ship.

I also need a source for norcold parts. Possible one that will allow me to
try out a power module/supply Or one where I can send my Power module/supply
to verify it is working.

Any thoughts or Information is greatly appreciated.

Jack,

I've heard that Norcold had problems with the DE561. They replaced it with
the DE461 and when I inquired as to the difference, the tech guys at Norcold
told me that they had replaced the 50hz compressor with a more efficient
60hz unit and added a second cooling fan. I would think that you could
replace the power supply and compressor with the newer units for much less
than the cost of a new fridge. I would also add the second fan too, which
IIRC, cools the power supply. For parts and assistance try:

I've never used them, but several in this forum have given them high marks.
Just keep in mind that this is a "cottage business" and response to
inquiries may not be instant.

HTH and good luck,
