Solar is a common upgrade in Europe but it is just too weak to operate 2 ACs etc. in the middle of nowhere. We sometimes have hailstorms in our area. These two points prevent me from using any form of solar power. Just for your information: Europeans love to dry camp. In the North of Europe you can park for either free or close to free, and if you don’t hookup to electricity it’s always cheaper. So, it’s really common for European RVers to put a few solar panels on their roof to keep the batteries charged along the way. Green energy? Yes, of course. But not for our purpose, sorry. Besides that it´s too expensive. I want to run my ACs in e.g. Sweden where nobody is around or at U.S. Car Meetings and open air car shows. There is usually a lot of noise, so who cares about a running generator?

In September 2021 I started to clean the Revcon from the bottom up. I rented a premises from the local shooting association. Don´t mess around with that guys. Pay your rent in advance.

The NuTone Food Center was very expensive in those days. It still is! I have checked the prices on Ebay for some NuTone accessories. Good lord. It was part of the Revcon´s original equipment.

So folks, that´s what we have done in 2021 so far. In my next posts I will go into detail about my heavy Oldsmobile Toronado UPP FWD "vibration problem" which I want to solve in spring/summer 2022.

If you are interested, please refer to the "Maintenance, Repairs and Technical - Chassis Systems" section.

I wish you a Happy New Year. Best greetings from Austria, take care and stay healthy. I want to thank you for your interest up to now.

Revcon Storage R. Forum Feb. 22.webp

While my Revcon is sleeping it´s time to think about my To-Do List 2022...

Some work is still left from 2021, my mechanic runs his shop alone and I´m only able to spend 3 weeks in a row during the summer time to help him out. Corona lockdowns didn´t help too. But together and step by step there will be some progress. The Revcon should be finished in summer 2023 because in July we are going up to Sweden. The trip is supposed to be a present for my milestone birthday.

Well, here is the To-Do List 2022:

1.) Most important, my vibration problem. Please refer to "Maintenance, Repairs, and Technical/Chassis Systems".

2.) It´s not possible for me to get the correct small seals which are leaking from above.

Mismatched seals.webp

Seal outside R. Forum.webp

I have the plan to replace the seals at the fixed windows with a sealant e.g. DAP Dynaflex Ultra Advanced. The seals on the bottom of the windows are not leaking so it should be enough to replace them only on the top and on the sides. We will see. I have already asked different companies in Germany and Austria but it is very expensive to create custom-made seals - up to 2.000 USD and more. So this is not an option for me.

3.) The exhaust manifold gasket on the passenger side is leaking. I have found some useful information on the internet. There it was pointed out that the center bolt is the one that will most likely break. This is because the other four have a hole that exists at the spark plug indent and can be lubed with penetrating oil. So put the oil in and give it time to penetrate, then heat the bolts and add some more oil. I have already ordered a new gasket. In my case with the 403 engine it should be possible to get to the bolts from above. My mechanic wanted to cut through the wheel case in order to reach the bolts.

4.) New paint for the bottom of the Revcon, hubcaps included. There are also some more spots to be done, like under the grill and on the front spoiler.

5.) Front headlight adjustment is still too low.

6.) The 2 cameras on the back need their own power line. Right now they are connect with the whole back lighting system which is too much.

7.) Preservation of tandem and undercarriage. There is some rust found as part of the safety inspection 2021.

8.) Installation second AC on the front part of the roof in order to create 2 different climate zones.

9.) Installation Pramac generator.

10.) New trim on the sides with Revcon lettering.

11.) Fuel leak - information from the net: If the smell only occurs when the tank is full, the problem could either be the lines (above) or an issue with a check valve that's stuck open in the fuel vent line going to the evaporative canister. This problem can actually cause fuel to leak onto the ground sometimes when filling the tanks.

Tank R. Forum.webp

I think that my Revcon hasn´t got a check valve. The problem could be a leaking fuel vent line (Nr. 7) or a faulty nozzle (Nr. 5). The leak only occurs when the tank is complete full. I hope that it´s not the tank.

There´s still a lot to be done. But I can´t wait for the summer!!!

Greetings From North Carolina,

I own a 72 Revcon Project and a much more complete GMC Birchaven (23 ft) And i am very interested in road tripping around Europe in the next few years. Not thinking about taking the coach there but rather finding some way to explore Eastern Europe over a long summer, preferably in a vehicle i don't have to return to a rental car company.

Wife and I are retiring this year. We have two boys. plan to get LOTS of travel in before they leave the nest.

I'd be very interested in your input on how to execute my silly ideas.

Dave

Hi Dave! Hello from Austria!

It' s definitely not a silly idea ;-) You are most welcomed to explore our "good old" Europe!

But I would suggest to rent a camping vehicle in Germany to visit Eastern Europe. There are some cheap ones in e.g. Plauen - Eastern Germany. My Revcon is only located 15 minutes from this city, so I could help you to make some arrangements. As a foreigner, it is not so easy to buy one and get it registered in Europe as it would be in the US. I once bought a 1977 Ford Thunderbird near Boston, MA and got it registered on my name for 2 months but this doesn' t work out so easily here in Europe. To get a car or a RV on the streets you need an official "Hauptwohnsitz" (main residence) in Europe. My Revcon, by the way, is registered on account of my girlfriend from Germany. I am an Austrian guy. It' s cheaper that way because it' s even a problem for Austrian people to drive a German registered car on the streets of Austria on a daily basis. You have to do a lot of red tape and pay a lot of money to get an Austrian title. The Revcon stays in Germany most of the time. So I take "the risk" of driving a RV with a German license plate in Austria for a very short time per year. The Austrian police is allowed to take your German license plates away if Austrians use the vehicle in Austria on a daily basis e.g. for shopping. As an Austrian citizen you have to get Austrian license plates for a German car within 30 days. Must seem crazy for Americans. Unfortunately there are no "United States of Europe". So, every country in Europe still has got its own laws concerning car registration and taxation.

Best greetings,
Matt

Matt,
While I realize that countries in Europe are supposed to be different than states here, there are just as many inconvenient rules.
My wife worked in Texas for several months. She was stopped and told to get Texas registration insurance and driver's license. That also required that she get a Texas title for the car. She did all of that and then the job went bad. She came back up here and was then told that the Texas title had expired so she had to do the whole run-around for Michigan.

From some recent research, it turns out there is always someone who sees opportunity in these things. In the US it's South Dakota- apprently it is very easy to maintain registration in SD without ever returning to the state. Doesn't help if you are settling in a new place but it's a solution for the full vagabond.

Meanwhile across the Pond, Bulgaria has positioned itself as the used car mecca of Europe and they have agents who will set you up a corporation so you can buy and register a vehicle and drive it all over Europe.

I have not tested either of these but it's on my radar.

Return to the state? My understanding is you set up a mail forwarding service, then they register your vehicle for you and mail you the plates. Don't have to go to SD even once.

Well, the winter break is over...my Revcon started in one second, I even didn' t have to recharge the front 12v battery. I just turned its main switch on.

20220411_110127.jpg

First we took care of the problem with the Truma heater which showed a trouble code on its display: "Air intake or exhaust blocked".

20220411_133232.jpg

20220411_140458.jpg

There is an exhaust pipe inside of a black tube. The black tube has the function of an air intake. It was kinked, causing the heater to shut off. Now the Truma is working again.

20220412_095947.jpg

Preparing the cracked spoiler for a new paintjob.

20220412_100047.jpg

Removing the old leaking gaskets. I didn' t find any new ones...I have searched everywhere. Vintage Trailer Supply, who were able to deliver fuzzy glass channel seals for the sliding windows in my Revcon, didn' t have that small ones for the outer side of the integral windows.

20220412_100057.jpg

So we used Dekalin 8936 Dekaseal to create a "gasket". For this job you need a steady hand. The result looks like a real one. Let' s see how it works in a heavy thunderstorm...and I hope that the windows don' t start rattling

20220412_100020.jpg

20220412_100007.jpg

I checked the space on the roof for the second AC Unit. I am going to take a Dometic 2200.

20220412_112352.jpg

A Dometic 3000, like the one in the back over the bedroom, would be too big.

Screenshot_20220412-113334_Chrome.jpg

The adjustment of the passenger' s seat was broken. Now it can be turned again.

20220412_143301.jpg

We mounted the vintage yellow fog lights (Bosch - Made in Sweden!) on the front bumper.

20220412_153145.jpg

We removed the sofa in order to attach 3 seatbelts on its frame.

20220413_100045.jpg

We are going to use the white power cord to get a power supply for the second Dometic AC unit.

20220413_114512.jpg

Unfortunately a cat was able to climb into the open slide window on the driver' s side. It piddled on the sofa, but I was lucky...a marten would have been worse.

20220413_101028.jpg

Removing the old window colors...took a lot of time.

To be continued...

I have bought two original sales brochures from Ebay.

20220506_154831.jpg

20220506_154843.jpg

They provide some very interesting information, e.g. the use of aircraft aluminum (6061) for the exterior skin.

20220506_182330.jpg

Some facts about the generators. I bought the 3500 i/o Pramac inverter yesterday.

20220506_182523.jpg

It will need an anti-theft device when mounted on the slide out. My mechanic from Eastern Germany suggested a set gun. This was not a joke. During the Cold War he was responsible for the maintenance of the SM-70 on the inner German border. Good man, but this is creepy.

I like the floorplan with the big bar option opposite the kitchen. Could the GMC Motorhome be ordered with such a feature?

20220506_154903.jpg

Well, in those days everybody needed a drink everywhere. Have a look at "DALLAS" (1978).

This show was heavily played in Europe. Obviously an expensive motorhome from the 1970ies had to be delivered with a kind of booze storage. There is also a small second bar between the swivel seats opposite the sofa. My Revcon is equipped with a kind of mini-bar, including a mirror and a brattice above the fridge.

20220506_154957.jpg

Later models didn' t have the big bar option anymore. I like the "family room" in the back.

20220506_155014.jpg

Jarring interior.

20220506_155037.jpg

What seemed to be a kind of dirty laundry storage in my Revcon is a vanity in fact. Didn' t know that. Please note the ashtray in the background. Smoking and drinking in a motorhome? No problem.

20220506_155045.jpg

It is always good to have the original brochures available.

Unfortunately, my mechanic was ill during the last 4 weeks - probably Corona. He never sees a doctor, he always tries to recover with the help of home remedies...63 years old. From the old beat. Anyway, there is some progress:

Repainted window frames.

Installing a power outlet for the second AC unit under the sofa. I am going to order the Dometic 2200 next week.

Some "weird" stickers to keep off any camper muggers. I' not a marksman, I don' t own a gun and we haven' t got a German shepherd.

Checking the AGM/12v battery.

I have bought a second Dometic AC unit in order to create two climate zones in our Revcon. A Dometic 3000 can be used over the bedroom in the back, the second Dometic 2200 will be mounted above the dinette/sofa in the front.

Finally, the repainting of the roof (2020), sides (2021) and lower sides/hubcaps/grille (now) has come to an end.

I thought it was funny on your trip calculations to Sweden. “Gas, tolls, food, beer”! I would of reversed the food/beer! great report. Looks like you have yourself a great motorhome!
Scott.

You´re right. Beer goes first! ;-) Thanks!

The second AC is already on the top, but my mechanik hasn´t installed it yet. New shiny red color on the lower sides of the Revcon.

Finally, I have found some wheel nuts that really fit. A member of the German Astro/Safari Van Forum sent me the link.

One nut broke during the wheel balancing procedure last year. The mechanic was not aware of the left-hand thread on the driver´s side.

Exhaust manifold gasket change. The manifold came off easily, but the edge of the pipe broke.

...but where can I get a new pipe from?

signal-2022-06-30-10-48-09-073.jpg

Should be willing to ship to Germany.

It's a shame the edge of that collector pipe went bad. I've never had that happen. Do they salt the roads in Austria? I'm in a salt-free state, so I don't see a lot of the rust related failures other people struggle with.
