When we drained our Trans. we did it for several days and found that we
could drain out 9 1/2 qts. Did nothing other than let it drain. As I said it
took several days. And no we were not over full to begin with.

Having just been there done that - I wish your family good luck - Based
on my experience, I would really recommend Dunn's - they did everything
they could to get us back on the road ASAP - Good people to work with -

First: I am glad I brought the company laptop.
Second: Thanks to all (Walt,Peter, etc) who have called me to
try to help.

What happened:

Tranny leaked when I got it last year. Been putting fluid in
religiously. Ken Frey took a look at it and felt that the filler
area and governor was leaking (which they were) and replaced/sealed
it. It was leaking much less on the way back from his place.
I have been questioning the Tranny temp guage as it will hold
160 degrees or so then flash up to full scale in a matter of
seconds. Checked the wires, and all was well. Running through
PA and West Virginia I was watching the guage and it held 160-180
most of the time. Then it would creep up, going up on downhill
runs and down on uphill (braking creates heat?).

About 90 miles after I put in 2 quarts, I was running at 200-205
(which is a bit high). All was fine, suddenly on an uphill climb
from Huntington to Ashland, the engine surged once came down
then surged quite loud and spewed smoke, I cut her into neutral
in.000005 seconds, had her on the side of the road (excellent
brakes thanks to Kens magic) had Julie, the kids and Skippy the
Dog on the side of the road (we had rehersed) and was under the
car with the extinguisher. The flames were on the drivers side,
I crawled around to the passengers side and put that side out
too.

Called Black list, no one in the area, called Tom at Grandview,
he gave me a troubleshooting proceedure. Checked the GMCMI list
AHAH! Dale Davis in Huntington! He was there with three quarts
of Tranny fluid in 20 minutes. Put it in, started, it spewed
out of the inspection hole (?) on the passengers side. Initial
diagnosis, Low fluid and fried torque converter.

Local AAmco shop recommended by a couple of folks (New owner,
the old one was a thief they said.

If tranny is shot I will get one from Danny Dunn with a 3.5 gear,
I think. If it is the torque converter, I will have them seal
the tranny up and put in an auxilliary cooler.

Any suggestions?

We will see what happens tommorow and plan accordingly. Were
scheduled to do Mamouth cave Monday and Tuesday, may have to
pass.

Thanks again to all who have helped or tried to.

Ron, Julie, Katelyn, Erika, Thomas and Skippy the Dog.

P.S. Dave, is Dale's coach registered? He wasn't sure. He also
is probably going to join the Black List.

Ron Kazi Update

GMCers,

I just talked to Ron on the phone, he is waiting for the tow
truck - looks
like his GMC has a serious transmission fluid leak from the torque
converter
area. He called a local GMC International member, who came out
to help him.
Ron thinks a transmission shop should be able to fix the problem,
if not
he'll get a tranny shipped from Danny Dunn.
Looks like everything is under control.

No help at this point, but if you get a new tranny, put in the vent
extension so that any that is ejected does not go on to the
mufflers. Sorry to hear of your problems

Sorry to hear of the problems, since you have a rental van,
just down the road from you is Natural Bridge State park ( Kentucky)
and about 100 miles away, near Lexington Ky is the KY Horse park, its
worth
a day trip, and the GMC rally was held there one year.

Dunn was $1550 + freight one way. They pay the return freight - air
freight on mine was $275 to Ontario, CA. Dunn also includes the 3.50
gears as standard. Tony Dunn told me the special things they do to
their transmissions to work in the GMC. They also have a 3 year 36,000
mile warranty. Installation was $900 in San Luis Obispo, CA.

The local transmission shops would only install their own rebuilds so we
went to an independent who would do the R&R. This is what we did.

Well, I fried my transmission. Drain plug was opened and fluid
barely dripped out between the metal pieces. Torque converter
shot and seal blown (probably the cause of the fluid ejection).
Ugly sight.

A full rebuild and an auxilliary cooler quoted at $1600-1700
w/12 month 12000 mile warranty by AA beep beep MCO. Got lots
of good recomendations on the shop. He is looking into putting
a 3.5 chain and gear on while it is out.
Is this a good idea? Does Danny Dunn sell the set as a part or
is this a basic transmission part? I will be towing the Tracker
in the future and will be doing some mountains in Colorado next
week.

Any other suggestions on things to have looked at/done while
the unit is out? It should be ready by Thursday at the latest,
then it is back on the road. Went to Carter Cave State Park,
a nice cool place to go on a hot humid day and a good substitute
for Mamouth Caves where we were supposed to be today.

Morale is good and we are eating a lot. Rental van and motel
covered by RV Alliance coverage. Any suggestions on where to
visit in the South Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia area.

Nothing that I can tell. The coach does have a bit of a stench
but some open windows should take care of it. I think I got to
it quick enough thanks to planning and good brakes.

Ron,

Good luck with the transmission repair.
Did the fire do any damage?

Exactly how I felt. The transmission is the only thing that has left us
high and dry far from home. Best of luck.

The guy I am working with seems to be trying to meet the special
requirements of the GMC. Heavy duty torque converter (Allison,
I think) as speced by Tom, shift pack from Caspro, etc.

If I weren't in the middle of nowhere on limited time, I would
get a Dunn tranny and put it in myself.

Ron,
It sounds to me with all your bad luck you got some good luck too. By that
I mean the local tranny shop you stumbled on sounds to me like they are
knowledgeable and open to the special information you have. I bet you get a
super job from them. Be sure to give us all the info on symptoms and
possible warnings when you get back from vacation. Good luck.

Ron & Bob,
Might be handy to post who and where that transmission shop is located,
after finding out the quality of their work.

Roger

Tom,
What am I missing? Why do I need a separate manual kick down switch when
the shift lever is already there? Just move it to second gear. As a matter
of fact, I've disconnected my kick down switch so I can run full throttle
without a down shift if I prefer.

One more suggestion Ron since you are going to install the kick down switch.
Wire another switch in parallel with it and install the switch near your
steering wheel somewhere where you can easily reach it. This will allow you
to manually kick down the tranny WITHOUT turning on the quadrajets hungry
secondaries when you are going up a hill and want to keep your momentum. Its
a wonderful mod that everyone should do.
