GMC Experiment

Ken & Mac: When I ordered my mile star 16.5 tires from Walmart there was an option to deliver to store or home. I did not know if delivered to
store they would mount free. I'll check on that Ken, Tennessee might be different. I did call Sams club and they will not mount tires bought from
Walmart. The Walmart local says they didn't do motorhomes. I put my spare in the truck with a new tire and went riding around, went to big Walmart
on I-40 and they looked at it in the truck and said they would be glad to mount and balance but it was first come basis and they were 2 hours wait. I
was told if Walmart balanced and mounted I could get road hazard warranty but no price or charges was discussed. Tires I have bought from Sams
charged $9 @ iirc for mounting and road hazard a few years back.
Ken since you took your tires in to get mounted did you get road hazard or was it offered?

I had the tires delivered to the store for convenience only. When I went
to pay I was surprised to only be charged the disposal fee (I'd already
paid in advance for the tires & tax via credit card). "We don't charge to
mount tires sold by Walmart." No one mentioned road hazard but I remember
seeing that it would be available -- I think for 30 days after purchase. I
don't know the cost but should probably check & buy it, not that you
mention it.

I've never found a Sam's nor Walmart that would mount on an RV (bays aren't
generally big enough, if for no other reason). In fact, I don't think
they'll mount on anything that they can't verify the correct tire size is
being mounted. That would let us out with our 16" wheels, even if they
could discover OEM was 16.5, which I'm sure they couldn't.

Oh yeah, I measured out the rest of the bottle of airsoft pellets I bought
into 4 oz. baggies. The 5000 ea. 0.25 g. beads were enough for 11 tires.
I'll try to remember to bring the extras (along with Heller's ceramic
beads, which may be small enough to need valve core protection) to
Mansfield in case anyone needs them.

I think I'll check with Discount Tire to see if they can get the Westlake tires. Discount put on new tires in New Braunfels, TX where I bought my coach. Those tires are now timed out at five or six years with only 500 miles (at most) put on them. Local Discount Tire sold me my alloy wheels (two every month or so) and changed out the tires to the new rims.

I was not going to post. Ken looks like he has done his research, and Fred's experience is worth it's weight.

but.. My in-laws bought a Grand Design 5th wheel toyhauler about 5 years ago now. at that time I joined a couple forums that catered to the "Grand
Design" RV's. WestLake brand have a pretty poor reputation in those circles as they are the primary tire that the 5th wheel comes off the assembly
line with. 2nd year of ownership when one of the in-law's friends had a blow out on their almost brand new 5th wheel(bought that fall and they were
on it's first trip to winter in AZ) and it left them stranded down in middle of know where Arizona(I guess out in some places, trying to get a 5th
wheel toy hauler towed off the highway is as difficult as a GMC). He even had a tire pressure monitoring system. My father-in-law decided to toss
all the pretty much new West Lake tires for some higher rated goodyear. I see many posts about blown out westlake tires on these seemingly brand
new pull behind RV's on the forum.

however with that said, WestLake, goodyear or michelins? there are stories of blow outs with all the manufactures somewhere. low pressure,
overloaded, bad luck? Probably impossible to figure out root causes. I have friends that can drive all day on old dry rotted tires, but if I try
it, I will end up with the blow out.

My and my wife’s safety is far more important to me than saving $600 on tires every six years.
If one blows you’ll likely have much more than that in body damage.

I won’t join in your “experiment “. Over the years I’ve seen too many cases of cheap overseas tires failing.

Remember the old adage “you get what you pay for”. It has been proven true many, many times.

I don’t see any experience given with driving them long term.
Ken just recently installed them and Fred has them on a vehicle in Alaska that isn’t driven many miles per year and likely at much lower speeds than the average GMC is driven on Interstates.

I’ll keep an open mind but I’d need a few years of someone’s hard use to convince me otherwise.

The Milestar tires are marketed by Tireco in Gardenia, California manufactured in Taiwan.

When I was a kid, the cheap stuff was Japanese

Then their stuff got great, and cheap came from Taiwan.

Then Taiwan went upmarket, and the cheap junk came from South Korea.

Then they improved, and the cheap stuff was China.

There’s a pattern here.

Where to next? Vietnam? The Malaysian stuff is already quite good.

I guess I don’t look askance at “Made in Taiwan” anymore.

Your points are well taken. But in the past I've always bought the "brand
name" tires -- and had trouble with them too. If these "cheepies" start to
act up, I'll "upgrade" again -- but unless they really act up badly, I
don't know that upgrading will be an improvement.

By the way, IIRC, a few years ago you had a tire blow out leaning against
your garage. T/F? What brand was that one? And I also remember seeing,
in WA state, IIRC, a Michelin that blew out while mounted as a GMC spare.

Well, I called it an experiment, so I don't take responsibility for anyone
choosing to play follow-the-leader. :-)

By the way, regarding those frequent failures on the 5th wheels OEM
Westlakes: With that history, I'd sure be doing what I'm glad I did after
leaving Walmart -- Check all the tire pressures!!! I'd fully expected that
they'd have done as they should and inflated them to the maximum of 80
psi. Nope -- they were at 40-50 psi!

One thing I'd add about the blowouts on new RVs and 5th wheel trailers... I've read lots of horror stories about how (particularly new...) owners pack
everything including the kitchen sink in the ample storage most of those units have underneath the "house floor" and that there are a LOT of RVs and
trailers running around way, way over gross. Of course, we GMCers avoid that behavior if only because there's no place to store the kitchen sink. ;)
Given the weight rating of the tires we're talking about, I can easily believe that at least some of the failures were due to serious overloading.

And FWIW, I had a couple "brand name" tires come apart on me after about six years. They didn't leave me stranded, but were showing lots of sidewall
cord when I got home.

That's all to say that I'm going to watch this thread with interest, since I've got four tires that are pretty much aged out...

I suspect you are a detail oriented person (the underwood labels gave you away) and these tires met the specs for your coach. I'm not sure if it's
the 23' Birchhaven or the 26' Palm Beach. Do you think the weight difference between the two would change your mind as to these tires, or are they
sufficient for both?

My tires may be creeping up on 10 years...

I gave the 26' to my son 8-10 years ago, so I let him worry about it now
('tho' I did give him the unused spare from my old set on the 23'). So,
yes, the Birchaven got the new Westlake tires. Not that it would have
mattered if it was a 26' one -- they both call for Load Range E tires
(rated for 2680# at 80 psi). Some folks in the past have been willing to
use LRD tires on their 26's -- I would never. In fact, I'd use LRF, LRG,
or maybe LRH, if such were made. :-)

Don't tell me I've claimed another victim to join my experiment!? ('Tho'
with 10 yo tires, you may not not be justified in claiming victimhood).

Just to sling a bit of mud into the fight...i find it interesring that people would beat up Ken for going down this road but yet would encourage his
purchase if they were Michelins or BFG's bought at Walmart (Target etc).

The truth is the BFG or Michelin or any other name brand tire is made to Walmart or those other stores specs....they are NOT the same tires you get
directly at a Michellin tire store etc or they are seconds. Sears was the worst for this.

Now this isnt to say those or any tires are good or bad but all these tires are tested, rated and certified to be on the road.

My personal experience with off brands like Kuhmo etc has been really good although sometimes the rubber compound is a bit harder or they maybe a
little noisier. Will i join the no name brand crowd? Not sure but after looking over the Michelins that came with my coach and how bad they have
weathered i can say im not going to replace them with the same......YMMV

Nokian Rotiiva HT All-Season Radial Tire - 225/75R16 112S

Finnish brand but made at there St. Petersburg Factory.

They are making a factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
If any of that matters to anyone.

My personal experience and our customers on tires seem to be age related.
When one runs for a long stretch at low air pressure, the tire will blow
out and fall apart in small pieces and lose air pressure and very little
damage to the coach.
When one runs tires over 5 yrs and not use the coach frequently, the tread
peals off in large piece and damage the inner fenders and access doors.
Amount of damage will be over $ 1,000.
In my way of thinking, running on tires over 5 years only twice a year is
not about safety, but about frustration of repair.
Yes, your insurance will cover the damage.
People that use their coaches frequently seem to get by with longer
duration of use.
I have found that Good Year and Michalen are higher price.
Firestone seem to be reasonably priced and the tread seem to last.
When we work on the suspension system on customers coach, we start by
checking the air pressure. We find majority to be around 10-15 psi below
spec.
