What coils fit the Onan 7000 generator?

Points are ok but no spark. Condenser is fairly new. Was running ok when pulled out. Pushed it back in and it quit. Would not start. Checked the spark and there is none.

Unless you ground one plug wire there will be none. It's a 'wasted spark' system. Also appears on older Harleys - some of whose coils will work -
and several Chinese scooters.

Art,

I don't know what an Onan 7000 is, however, the 6 Kw generator that came standard in the 26' GMC's can use this coil with a bit of
modification to the mounting system in the Onan:

I check the coils I have. On my ohm met they all read 4.7 ohms. One coil is on an Emerald 1 that was given to me. It was running before I got it. So I guess my problem is not the coil.

I got it started once but it was running every rough. Earlier today I had it running and handling both AC unite. Than I push it back in and it ran for a while then quit. Since then it has not run. I changed the plugs and gaped them. No better. Tomorrow I’ll look for new plug wires. I used to have some solid wire ignition wires and will see I can fine them. If not I go buy some new ones.

I thinking pulling the capacitors off the Emerald 1 unite.

Check for a pinched fuel line... sometimes that happens when the drawer is slid in.

Good Luck !!!

From maintenance manual section 24c page 28

To test primary and secondary windings within the ignition coil proceed as
follows:
1. Use a Simpson 260 VOM or equivalent.
2. Place black lead on ground (-) terminal of coil and red lead to positive
(+)terminal. Primary resistance should read 4.30 (+ 10%) ohms.
3. Change resistance setting on ohmmeter. Place ohmmeter leads inside spark
plug cable holes. Secondary resistance should read 14,000 (+10%) ohms
(figure 42).
4. If any of the above conditions are not met, replace coil.

Check your oil level. There is a low oil shutoff that will shut you down if your oil gets too low. If the level is borderline, it will shut down and
restart then shut back down again.

There are a few 7KW Onan sets. One is similar to the 6KW RV unit but normally is 110/220 and has better manifolding. Won't fit a GMC, it's too
tall.

If it ran for a bit after you pushed it back in then it most likely explanation is that the fuel line got pinched.

OTOH if it did not run at all after pushing back in then I’d go after electrical. I think it would be quite an unlikely coincidence that your {points, coil, control board - pick one} failed at the exact moment you pushed it back in.

Before fiddling with ignition I would suggest confirming whether or not you have a fuel delivery problem by the simple test of taking the nut out of the bottom of the carb bowl and seeing if fuel drains out. If the bowl is dry then you have a fuel delivery problem. Rule that out before disturbing other systems.

The generator ran for a while when pushed back. The temperature went from 110 deg F to 160 deg F. I do not think it is a pinch fuel line. I think it is temperature related.

Check the fuel lines anyway, heat will can cause an vapor lock or you have
a line that has a crack or hole.

Thanks everyone. The fuel pump has been replace by one that mounts to the same location as the original generator. I’m going to move that pump under the RV to keep it cooler. In the process I will replace the fuel line under the generator.

I ordered new points and condensers for the generator just in case that's the problem. My coils ohm out right so they should be ok.

This morning the generator cranked right up. Weather not to good right now so I can not work on it.

Art,

There is no need to relocate the fuel pump, there are hundreds of Onans that run just fine with the fuel pump where it is.

RE: "My coils ohm out right so they should be ok."

Not necessarily, the Onan on Double Trouble would run for an hour or so then it would quit. If I opened the door and let it cool down it would run when it got cooler; I'd close the door and it would run for an hour or so and then quit again.

I installed a new coil and that fixed the problem.

I replaced the coil. Moved the fuel pump and it still did not run for 30 minute when pushed back. I was surprised that the generator started right up even with the fuel pump mounted on the RV frame.

Sick of playing with this generator. Something is heat sensitive. I have two condenser that I can replace. That will be all I could think of.

Well I started to replace the condenser at the points. Guess what it had come lose at the point connection. I tightened the connection. Started it up closed it up and it ran for 30 minutes. It was late so I shut it down and will run it more tomorrow.

It sounds like you are under the misconception that the Onan runs hotter when it is pushed in. Actually the way the fan is designed when the Onan is pushed in air will be drawn around and over the Onan so it will actually run cooler
when it is pushed in and the door closed.

You might also carefully check the point/condenser wire where they run
under the tin cover. On my 6k Onan the point (or condenser wire cannot
remember which) had gotten pinched and slightly bared which caused
intermittent runability issues.

Emery

I do not know if the motor runs hotter. The area where the fuel pump was mounted ran at 110F open and 160F closed. I measured it several times and it was always about 160F by the fuel pump when it quit.

I mean it ran closed for two hours before I shut it down. I did not open it up and check the temperature as the fuel pump is under the RV. Not sure that helped but it is done. My fuel pump is just standard car low pressure pump and not the Onan pump that had quit.

On top of the Onan the point cover was a little cooler … 145F.

I think I need to lean it out a little as it smells like it is running rich.

Thanks Art

Sully Thanks I looked at it see if wires were rubbing and they looked clear. Thanks

I really need to change the points and condenser but I am short of time. It ran much better today.

I guess I have the governor a little tight as the motor speeds up under load. The voltage goes from 120 to 124 with both AC running.
