In 1967. Linda, and I got married. And I quit a very good paying job. 1967 is the year that the cost of living is now based on. Gas cost around 33 cents a gallon then. Money was short. I had a collage scholarship that fully covered the 4 years. Tuition, books, housing, food, clothing, and $7 a month for gas. We paid close attention to the cost of gas at that time. I believe the cost of living is now 11, or 12 times higher now. That means that gasoline should now be at $3.63 to 3.96. I bought gas today here in Iowa for $2.24 a gallon. So we are driving cheaper now then in 1967. So enjoy your stops for gas with the deal. Bob Dunahugh

Sams in Longmont CO was $2.19 today.

Bob,
I'm in Canada so prices are higher, but I remember in 1976 the price of an imperial gallon of gas was 67.9 cents.

In 1978, I started my business and paid $4,500 for my first service van and charged $25.00/hr for my service rate (auto dealers were about $20.00/hr).
I sold and serviced 2-way radios like police and fire uses and they went for about $1,000 each installed. My dad also sold his 100 acre farm for
$125k

In 2018 I sold my business and retired. I paid $45,000 for the last service vehicle (10 x more) and our service rate was $99.00/hr (4 x more) (auto
dealers are now about $135/hr) A 2-way radio of the same capabilities as the 1978 models are about $500 (1/2 the cost). Farms (100 acres) are now
going for $2 million plus around here (16 x more)

Gas has been running about 1.25Cdn/Litre = $5.68Cdn/imperial Gallon or about $3.60US/ US gallon

In has decreased significantly in the past month. Gas today is around $1.05/litre = $4.77CDN/imperial gallon or about $3.01US/ US gallon

So I guess I should have joined my dad in farming!

Comparing apples to apples that 33 cents a gallon would be $2.82 for NON ethanol today in central Florida. Based on the cost of living index that is just slightly more per gallon.

If you want to check, a real eye opener is how much taxes are a part of the
cost of gasoline. Oregon has some of the highest gasoline taxes, as the
feds, state, and cities are taking their cuts. They have none of the
expenses of production or transportation or facilities, but they make more
per gallon than the oil companies. It is still a bargain compared to other
countries, including our neighbors to the north. Oregon is experimenting
with a per-mile-traveled use tax on hybrid and electric vehicles. It works
with a transponder off of the cars computer.

I filled up the scooter today - the equivalent of $3.70 USD/US gallon. About the same as I was paying in most of California. The price in Abbotsford, BC (a ferry ride away) is the equivalent of $3.32 USD, but it’s $2.83 USD in Calgary, AB!

Cheapest fuel I bought on our recent trip was in Eugene, OR - $2.99!

Well, my geologist buddies say that the "fracking" is more bogus hype from anti-capitalist hoaxers. The forces involved in fracking are pretty miniscule compared to natural earth movements five or more miles down.

Mac,
You must get an extra discount in Oklahoma to compensate for all the earthquakes from the fracking!

Really thankful for the men and women who have increased exploration and yield from our natural resources.

Wildly different market conditions from 50 years ago, and we work less for that gallon of gas today.

Happy to be living in the middle of the Marcellus and Utica shale.

To think that “they” told us in the 1970’s that we would have run out of oil by the year 2000.

Ingenuity at work.

Leaving the metroplex yesterday morning we paid $1.979 in Dallas, then
topped off again in Marble Falls in the evening for the same 1.979 price.
Along the way, like Hamilton, Texas prices were up to 2.59. The "Gas
Buddy" app on my phone helps me plan fill-ups for best prices. My estimate
is by checking prices ahead on my route we trim at least 20 cents a gallon
on average. When you are putting close to 20,000 miles a year on a GMC
that adds up to substantial savings.
Hugs,
Vern, Lenore and Knibbles D. Kat

Re: Taxes

I drove down from Seattle to Los Angeles at the beginning of the month. I'm still down here, headed back next week.

Gas prices in WA and OR were about $3.10 to $3.50 at most, cheapest at the 7 Feathers Indian Reservation.

I got into CA, it went to $4.50 to $4.90. I was remarking to my cousins about the huge difference and was told CA recently passed a massive fuel tax.

Yep, Render unto Ceasar, what is Ceasar's. Taxes are the bane of
Civiization. If we want safe infrastructure to drive our coaches on and

exclusively for that, (wishful thinking!)

Per https://taxfoundation.org/state-gas-tax-rates-july-2018/

California is #2 highest gas tax $.5522
Washington is #3 $.4940
Oregon is #12 $.3677

So at most, for these three states, the delta attributable to taxes is 18.45 cents.

The current price for regular here in San Pedro, CA, part of the City of Los Angeles, at my favorite Sinclair station (go Dino!) is $3.34 for cash
purchase. Chevron by the freeway is $3.70.

The most routinely expensive gas (+$2 to $2.50 vs. Los Angeles) in the State of California (that I am aware of) is at the Lee Vining Chevron station
(a generally unpleasant group of folks there). Lee Vining is on Highway 395 at Mono Lake (6781' of elevation) and is the back entrance to Yosemite.
There is an RV Park in town, and the area is a perfectly lovely place to visit.

Regards,
Tom Newell

Tom -- I'm heading back home to WA, and most likely going to go up 395 to cut through Carson City and Reno. I'll make sure I stay clear of Lee
Vining!

Yeah, I did notice that once I hit LA, the gas prices seemed to go down to more "Seattle-like" levels. I think the highest amounts were in Northern
California, coming out of the Siskiyou pass. Maybe they know everyone is either fueling up after (or before) the climb!

Don't get gas in Bridgeport either as bad or worse then lee vining.. I would fill up at the Indian casino in independence on the left going north
cheapest in the area. That will give you enough to reach Gardnerville Nevada. The gas in Gardnerville will be less then any in California.
