John:

I just installed a Fantastic Model 6000 (their top-of-the-line) fan two
months ago. Everything works straight out of the box.

Emery... re FanTastic Fan

Glad to hear there are still companies around that treat customers like
that... The fact that you took the time to 'pass it on' says companies
may be more encouraged to do things like that, if they get credit for
doing so. The net can amplify and propagate both the good and the bad
that companies do. So lets continue foster the behavior we want...

One question on the particular unit you have... I have heard that they
changed the wiring so that one of the sensors doesn't work now as shipped
from the factory. If anyone asks about that feature, they send
instructions on how to change a few wires around and get the feature
back. What's up with that? Do you or anyone know?. (Could it be too
many drained batteries in coaches that are closed up for weeks at a time
or coaches that get hot enough to start the fan and open in rain storms)

That's great to hear. I have 2 of those units. Did you have to be the
original owner like you have to be with Bilstein Shocks?

John,

I think people probably complained about the noise. If the temperature
outside gets too close to the thermostat setting, the vent would open and
close a little too often. This would get annoying if the circumstances
were just right for it to do it. Think about it being the middle of a cool
night with the vent open and the fan on. It cools off a little, so the
vent closes. Vent begins to close Whirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Fan Stops
Whirrrrrrrrrr Vent closed all the way. Now that the vent isn't open, the
temperature sensor sees only the inside air temp. Now that there is no
circulation, all the hot air in the coach rises to the vent. Now it is
warm enough for the vent to open Whirrrrrrrrrrrrr Fan Starts Whirrrrrrrrrrr
Vent all the way up. After this cycle repeats itself for 4 or 5 times
(even if over a decent length of time), someone usually gets up to turn the
damn thing off.

With the new wiring, it is my understanding that only the fan is
temperature controlled. That means that the only noise you will hear is
the fan stopping (silence) and fan going (slight noise). You don't get the
Whirrrrrrrrrrr of the vent opening and closing. Normally the temperature
is not going to change drastically enough that the vent not closing will
make that much of a difference. The fan is what really does the work and
makes the difference. If you wanted the vent open and the fan on when you
went to bed, you probably will be ok if the vent stays open the whole night
as long as the fan turns off when its starts to get cooler outside. If you
turn on the AC during the day, you would probably close the vent yourself
anyway rather than wait for the thermostat to realize that it was cool
enough in the motorhome to shut the vent automatically.

The only time my fan closes is if it rains. The fan does cycle on and off
during the night, but I have not found that objectionable. It is fair to
mention that I have only slept in my coach about 20 days now.

I am happy with my FANtastic Fans.

Thanks for the insight Zak... Sooooo, what we may have here is Emery's
may crank open and shut with temp and Paul's does not. Is that
the way each of your's works guys?

Maybe Richards message about this got stuck at mailinglists.org as
well as about 3 copies of mine. This is the same message but addressed
as a reply to Arch rather than Zak. Thanks again Zak.

John:

Temperature has nothing to do with it opening and closing the lid, only
turning the fan on and off. A switch opens and closes the lid and rain also
causes it to close and then open afterwards.

Actually when I drive my coach, so far it has been in warm weather, and
I have the ONAN on running the big air conditioner. I don't like to have
the vents open then. I do however keep the vent in the bath open. I hope
that helps the odor. It must work because the smell is gone .

The PO moved one of the old OEM vents to the bath. I thought it came
that way from the factory and was suprised to hear the OEM bath vent
was so small.

PS No one ever flashes their lights at me except the police and other GMC's
Maybe Arch is confusing light flashes of admiration from other passing RV's.
After all he has a Le Sharo and that's a unique unit and from the pictures of it
that I have seen, Arch has a real nice paint job on it.
