DigiPanel Accuracy

Greetings !!

I’m messing around with my cooling system. New 195 thermostat, Mercedes fan system, factory temperature gauge (with proper TS-6469 sender), and a
DigiPanel.

I’m skeptical of engine temperature as reported by my DigiPanel. The temp sender for the DigiPanel is a small copper flange that is squeezed into
the thermostat housing. Previously - I could see temperatures as low as 130 while my factory gauge still displayed 180-190. I discovered that this
temperature probe was directly subject to the significant air stream from the radiator fan... I suspected that said air stream was dramatically
cooling the thermostat housing - or at least the probe - and reporting temperature lower than the actual coolant. Convection. I’ve insulated the
probe with some high temp hose insulation. It seems improved - but I have not yet thoroughly tested it.

The same configuration exists for the transmission temperature probe. A small copper flange wedged in with one of the transmission pan bolts. It’s
in the airstream too !!

Any comments on the DigiPanel’s accuracy with such temperature probes ?? Anyone replace these probes with something in the actual liquid stream(s)
??

Thanks in advance for any insights.

Steve,

I noted this same issue.
Indeed, the one on the thermostat housing was significant, but when I relocated the measurement point to behind the housing and put an air deflector
around it, it came right in line.

When received my Digipanel, it came with a small piece of insulation that was for one of the temperature points as installed. So, after I noted the
same irregularity, I made sure to do similar with all three temperature measurement points. I doesn't take much to make them all, more or less, agree
with the infrared. There will always be some disagreement, but that is the nature (perverse as it may be) of instrumentation.

The actual temperatures any place in the system are simply not that important. You should be able to see important variations with enough warning to
deal with them, that is all you can ever hope for.

A map of the cooling system temperatures was in my plans, but we had snow and the have spread salt (aka fender solvent) on the roads. That means
Chaumière get to stay on the lot until the rain clears it all away.

I have been told that the boit is short, will not sense as well as the
longer.
There are over thousand units out there and have saved lot of engines.

I did not take this discussion as detrimental to the unit our you - just valuable info the technically inclined. One of my
Digi-panels indicates hotter temps than my engine gauge, but having gotten used to how it reads - I still know when to feel safe versus alarmed!

Mac:
She tripped while on an R V Volunteer church remodel project in Lufkin, Tx. - hit back of her head on concrete floor - very hard! In hospital in Tyler, Tx. for 2 brain bleeds and cracked skull! Neurosurgeon did his magic this am and she is doing better - still not out of the woods but so far her body is responding well and mending is
happening! Hoping to be out of ICU in 2 to 3 days and out of hospital in 7 to 10 days.
This hospital and dr’s and staff have been fantastic!
