Tom,

There is no duty since NAFTA or very little - .5%, .9%, 1.5% and these
are disappearing year by year. Some of them were at 25% 10 years ago. The
unreasonable and outrageous cost is what couriers call "brokerage fees" -
the cost to the receiver to clear an item through customs. On small items
many times it's more than the cost of the part. The courier companies also
do not explain the item to customs officals so it would qualify for no duty,
such as made in North America, made of fibreglas, and the many other
conditions have mean no duty. That's why I pick items up in Watertown, NY
as you know, Tom, or have it mailed from the US. Didn't you also have the
"brokerage fee" problem with the air tank from Alberta?

Jim Damaere ships from a location in the US - don't remember where(Idaho
maybe?). I bought my water heater tank from them back in the Spring.

No brokerage fee for the tank, it came straight to my door. I have never
heard of a brokerage fee, and was not aware of one until you just posted it?
Didn't NAFTA eliminate all of these?

NAFTA eliminated tariffs (or is reducing).
Brokerage firms are thriving as paperwork has increased due to NAFTA, as
have charges.
There is so much crap going on to "certify" that goods meet NAFTA criteria
that it would most likely be easier to pay a small tariff on everything
instead.

Many Canadians doing business in the US (i.e. ourselves) use a US shipping
point for outbound as well as inbound. Outbound so that the US customer gets
the goods right to the door, without hassle, which I suspect is how you got
the tank.

As a Canadian doing business in the US we get to pay $5 (US$) every time we
cross the border on business. I.e. even to simply mail some letters in the
US, $5 a crossing. (If business, personal = NC).

As an alternative to $5 each time you cross we buy a $100 sticker for the
car that is used most times to do the border jaunts. That's good for a year.

That's for the stuff we can do without a broker. If it's actuall parts for
the business, i.e. commercial, one pretty well has to use a broker as the
paperwork is no fun.

It's frustrating at times, but you get used to it eventually.... until you
meet a "new guy" that's trying to make a name for him/herself. (New guy as
in recently out of training :-)
