Caddy NORTHSTAR powered -GMC/MH---is it possible/feasable

Hi all

I've always been impressed with the Cadillac NORTHSTAR
engine technology. Now that the engine has been
around for a few years -- since '91 (not sure) - it
seems to me that some of the Caddy NORTHSTARs that are
involved in traffic accidents may start appearing in
our local Salvage yards. We have a number of
"YOU-PULL-IT" yards here in Florida. They have a firm
price list for almost every part - ( no matter what
year or what type car) -- Engines are ALL-169.99 with
a $35 core -- automatic Transmissions 4WD W/OD
ALL-$99.99 & $15 core

WHAT IS THE POSSIBILITY THAT A CADDY NORTHSTAR ENGINE
AND TRANSMISSION COULD BE USED IN OUR GMC M/H.

Here are the specs --

'73 455 OLDS -- 250 HP @ 4000rpms
374 FT/LBS torque @ 2800 rpm
455 Cu In Disp
3:07 Final gear

NORTHSTAR -- 300 HP @ 6000 rpms
295 Ft/Lbs Torque @ 4400 rpms
279 Cu In Disp
3:71 final gear (electronic 4 speed
(transmission 4T80-E
w/ P225/60 R16 tires

WELL what do you think -- could this be my new --NEXT
PROJECT ???

actually they are showing up in hot rods, ie. HOT ROD MAG.

It's certainly a technological marvel! Pretty, too.

I changed the water pump belt on my wife's baby Northstar yesterday, in a
'95 Olds Aurora. ( ~240cid , 250 hp ) Crazy thing! The water pump drives
off the forward inner camshaft! (there's 4 cams ya know) It uses a little
$7.00 belt with it's own tensioner. Piece o cake.

I'd love to see one of these stuffed into the front end of a GMC motorhome.
I'd be concerned about keeping up the rpm to provide the horses though.
Sure not much torque available without the revs. Torque's hard to come by
with a short stroker but it sure would be pretty under the hatch. Maybe
it'd be more feasible with a 6 speed tranny.

The new 99 Olds Intrigue has a V-6 Version of the NorthStar that is referred
to as the ShortStar... It is a 3.5 litre engine

Hay Arch; its me; Yoogeebear who was at AOL since 1994. Jumped on board
about the same time you did on GMCMotorhome.com. Took a break, am back for
a while, to see if there are any new idea's....am leaving for Grand View
Texas friday morning in my "white"75 GlenBrook; to install another I-beam
Plant for Universal Forest Products.. Taken one of my Pentiums with, but
don't know if they have phones down there...ha ha.

Has anyone considered a relatively new Chevy 454 used in trucks or tow
vehicles? Seems a good way to get new electronics with big cubes. Hookup
to tranny possible without adapters?

While the diesel does show higher torque at a lower rpm, I never have
appreciated the shake, rattle, and roll of a diesel. Not to mention the
fuel messes. The 454 does show a greater torque but at a slightly higher
rpm than the Olds 455. That probably could be addressed with different cam,
etc. One thing though, NOTHING BEATS CUBES. These engines ought to be out
there in the local junk yards in beat up Surburbans.

Yea nothing beats cubes!!! got a 454 in garage in my 74 stepside(another
project maybe, its all piling up on the to do list and I just moved here).
You know my buddy had a 74 with a 350 init we took about a 200 mile trip, he
used alot more gas than I did and he couldn't stay close to me if I didn't
want him too. Just my info on cubes. Might use alittle more oil but I love
em!!
