Sigh....

Starting a couple of weeks ago, I started hearing some noise from the front
of the engine area in my 1977 Royale w the 403 engine. While waiting for
some warmer weather, I decided to go ahead and order a water pump just in
case that was the problem and to have as a spare if it was not.

I'm familiar with Jim Anstett's article on water pumps in the Jan 1977
issue of GMC Motorhome marketplace. He discussed three different water
pumps, one with a stamped impeller, one with a 3 15/16" diameter impeller
and small blades, and finally one with a 4 1/4" impeller with large blades.
He rated the first two as very poor and poor. The recommended pump is not in
production any more but in the article he mentions that Ray Curtis of Eaton
GMC & RV Sales and Service (Now Eaton Distributing, Inc.) has acquired a
large supply.

Well, I called Eaton and ordered the water pump on the 16th and got delivery
on the 24th by UPS. This would have been a looong wait if I'd had a failure
on the road. The pump was $79.95 plus $16.55 shipping. But...... it's pump
#2 mentioned in the article. Rated poor by Anstett. So back on the phone to
Eaton.

General outline of phone call
Hey, you sent me the wrong pump, I wanted the one mentioned in the
GMCMM article.
Sorry, that's out of production and we don't have anymore. We found
it was unreliable anyway. The pump we shipped is the original GMC pump. Feel
free to return the pump we shipped and we'll refund your money less
shipping.

sigh.....

OK, what do I do now? Is there a source of the 'preferred' water pump?

I'll be out $35 bucks for shipping in returning this unit. Anyone got the
preferred one for sale?

I'm sure there is something to be learned in this but I'm not sure what.

You might check with Daryl Winterfeldt (303-530-4995). I understand that he
had an "improved" water pump. I don't have any personal experience with it
- - maybe some other GMCnetters do...

this is a situation that we are all going to contend with and the catalyst
for my intention of taking the tranny and oil cooler out of the engine
radiator and having separate coolers. I like Mondellos ideas relative to
how to reduce engine block temp and I plan to follow it. I believe that any
of the larger water pumps will than work. I would ask any supplier to
describe the exact pump they are going to ship. If they can't or won't,
than I would not buy it.

Caspro has the 4.25 inch impeller pump in their catalog. Their number is 1
800 877-1911. The cost in the catalog is $89. It is item number 026.1.19 .
I saw one at the Myrtle Beach ralley. Chuck has left the ralley and you
should be able to contact him tomorrow.
