Lot of people rent the bearing tool and have the shop forman call me so I
can guide them on the front. Majority of the time the knuckles will need to be replaced as they will be loose fit.
You can get the rebuilt one from Dave Lezi or us as we size them to last.
As Jim Hupy mentioned, check the rear for play in the arm.
The rear is a snap to grease. Yes if you have the time , do it properly or just grease it .
I have observed Penski lub their fleet, they never lift it at all.
Better to have ome rease than to run dry till you have time to do it right.

yea I am familiar with what you say....my friend owns a milling machine shop..I have talked to Dave L...I know I could send them out...just would like a expert like Dave take them apart and inspect...then might even go 1 ton if I know the condition of thing including cv etcs...Brian 77 ele 455

Brian,

When you disassemble the hubs and knuckles you MUST check surfaces that the bearings ride on (the bore of the knuckle and the OD of
the hub). They must be true, square, and concentric. Quite often the bore of the knuckle has been elongated and is oval vertically.
The knuckles were bored with a pointed tool which results in a support area that looks like this a string of WWWWWWW's. The outer
bearing races are supported by the points of the W which "flatten out" over time. The OD of the hub can be tapered as well.

It seems to me that you might want to consider contacting Dave Lenzi and have him ship you complete hub, knuckle, and disk
assemblies with a zerk installed. You could have a local garage remove the existing assemblies from the upper and lower ball joints
which is reasonably straight forward.

Dave's hubs and knuckles are ground to make them true, square, and concentric. Material is flame sprayed on the ground surfaces and
then ground to the correct dimensions.

He supplies brake disks with four bolt holes sourced from Cinnabar which are made in the USA and are not re-drilled units from
China.

I can tell you that both Dave and I can tell you that going to one ton has
its issues.
Since Dave and I know how to make the origional system work for 80-100,000
miles , your not doing justic.
People like Bob Duahugh and others can explain the short comings of One
ton, we do sell one ton, so figur that one out.

I am just northwest of the twin cities. (St. Cloud)

I do not know those two names above. We suffer from a lack of qualified shops that do work on GMC's. What we do lack in shops up here we have a
huge amount of long term GMC owners that have great knowledge and experience. I am fortunate to be able to do my own work and fortunate enough to
have that knowledge base to fall back on. If you can I suggest getting involved in the club if you can manage.

I have been around Dave Lenzi's bearings and I feel that is one way to get front end bearings that will out last you. Otherwise borrow a puller and
DIY. How many years will it take you to run 30k miles?? Before they are due for service again?

I would tell you to drive it to my place to do bearings, but I am no expert. Comfortable enough to work on my own coach, but do not want to be
responsible for your front end.

As far as for drivability. There are too many variables. But there are many experts willing to walk you through some steps. Most issues are hide
height and steering box centering related. Next problem I have seen is someone that did not understand the relationship of suspension height doing
the wrong adjuatments or installing the wrong parts. We have had some club work rallys checking this, but it is not something the club has been
able to do every year.

Lots of ideas her but nothing very local to you. Minneapolis is a days drive or around 450 miles. Then you will be stuck there until you get the
coach back together.

So here is what I would do if you feel up to it and have a place to work in this weather.

Call Dave Lenzi and make sure he has time to rebuild your knuckles. Remove both front knuckles and cart them down to Pembina (70 or 80 miles) and ship
them FED-EX ground to Dave. Get a receipt from Canadian Customs on your way south so they can not later say you are importing something on the way
back. Have the knuckle return shipped to the same Pembina location and held for pick up. Get Dave to include a receipt that says "repaired antique
auto part using customer supplied core." Take pictures of them before shipment to keep the Canadian Customs people happy upon return.

Removal of the knuckles is not difficult:
Loosen big nuts in middle of wheel
Jack up and remove wheels
remove brake calipers
remove shocks
disconnect tie rod
disconnect upper and lower ball joint
remove knuckle and place in shipping container

That is from memory. I hope I remembered everything.

Installation is the reverse of the above.

I know of no adjustments required other than torquing the big nut in the center of the wheel.

When I sent my knuckles in to Dave by FedEx ground, they delivered and returned them in one day each way. (It might take 2 days from Penbina). I had
them back in 6 days total.

I seriously doubt replacing the bearings will improve your steering any, but if they need to be done for other reasons, then by all means do it.

good advice and logistics...only problem is...how do I know they should be done other than I have no hx...they seem tight but....should I change them ...I guess I have been thinking a person familiar with good and bad as it applies to gmc front bearing and cv joints would know upon examination if they were good and do not need replacement or if iffy...I got new front Timkins from jim K to have on the road in case of trouble...neither happened for multi years...Brian 77 ele 455

Brian,

There is no way of knowing whether the bearings, hubs, knuckles are good or bad unless they are disassembled, cleaned, and
inspected.

CV joints are another story which I'm not going into.

ship them to JimB or JImK and it will probably cost you less than driving to the class West I lace

DO NOT remove the shocks without unloading the torsion bars first! Or jack under the control arm to stop it from traveling downward due to spring
pressure. A little bit dangerous but doable safely with the right technique. You do not need to remove the shocks to remove the knuckles anyway.

You are right. I was thinking about removing the lower control arms or torsion bar. It is Not necessary on knuckle. It has been a long time since I
did one. Front coach weight does need to be supported on the lower control arm. Do not let the lower control arm just hang down. I usually jack it
up in the center and then put some jack stands or 4x4 cribbing under each control arm. Then drop the coach on them. I leave the lowered jack in the
middle with a light amount of weight on it just for some extra safety.

tolerances on movement of wheel on different planes????sounds while rotating...I am not familiar with changing bearings just because.... we have never done that.....can they be drilled in place?....brian 77 ele 455

Jim K at Applied, and Dave Lenzi to me are the best choices. I put a 1 ton unit under a friends 78 GMC. Nice unit. But I'll never install one again. We're thinking of pulling that 1 ton back out. It doesn't have the proper geometry. The big talk with the 1 ton is that it has a lifetime bearing that can't be greased because it's a sealed unit. It's a throw away unit at whatever mileage it fails at. Seen many in GM trucks that didn't make it very long. Then you go buy an all new one again. A rebuilt original with the grease fitting should more the likely never fail. Just get out the grease gun every 50,000miles. Put $2 worth of grease in. Done. But. Front components are only half the story. The back is another subject that you need to know about. Bob Dunahugh
