Backup Camera thoughts...

With my new idea to tow this new (to me) 74 VW Bug, it is obvious I will not be able to see it while traveling without a backup camera to monitor it with. My research so far finds hundreds (?) of camera set ups both wired and wireless and I am wasting a lot of time looking at units that don't apply to this situation. Thus, I am wondering if any of you have found one you are happy with whose primary purpose is viewing back behind the coach to observe a car being towed or simply for backing up.....???? My last two motorhomes had built in back up cameras that worked great but were installed by the manufacturer.

If you use the Black List to contact Richard Waters in Michigan, he has more GMC - Camera experience than most and can probably be a good source of information. His communication is largely by e-mail, so I would advise that you a start there.

I looked him up (Waters in Mi) and no e-mail on Black list... ? I too need a BU camera "system"
 
I'm still pondering getting a wireless Garmin backup cam that I can plug into my trailer wiring and mount temporarily. I already move the Garmin GPS navigator back and forth from the pickup to the motorhome, so I may as well pair it with a camera that could also be moved as needed. I've been thinking a nice magnetic mount on the Chevy's tailgate or bumper, or on the GMC's spare tire.
 
My coach came with a Kenwood hard-wired camera, mounted on the rear window glass. The monitor however, is from tiny kingdom and I would like to get something larger if possible. ATM it's pretty difficult to see what's going on back there and the main use is letting me know the coach is in reverse. :rolleyes:

I didn't want to join another group, but since my name has been mentioned, I figured I better join to defend myself. I've been lurking for a while looking at the "What's New" tab.

So here I am. An owner since 1998 of the same Palm Beach and on the GMCNET email list since 1999.

I've had backup cameras on my GMC for over 15 years now. The first being a wireless backup camera that was always on with the ignition. It had a pretty small display, but was way better than nothing.

Then I went to a 3 camera hardwired setup over 6 years ago. It's also always on with the ignition. It has a 7" color HiDef monitor. I love being able to see whats behind and on both sides of the vehicle. One of the better upgrades I've made over the years.

I did a GMCMI tech seminar back in 2018 on backup cameras in general and on my system in particular that I could put up if there is interest.

I purchased (Amazon) a 12" wired rear view mirror/camera. 4K front view, 1080P rear view. It works fine, plus has a backup mode with different viewing angle. I have a wireless system on my Airstream and I don't like the delay so for the GMC I wanted a wired system.

I also plan on installing a 360° surround view camera system. Looking at the REI system here

Glen, coincidentally just this past week end I was in a friends 2021 or 2022 Toyota SUV and he has a rearview mirror camera and I was amazed at its clarity and depth of field. So, your post is timely for me. Which model did you get... I am looking at Amazon now..... thanks, Rod

I just finished hooking up a wired backup camera
( ) $135
and a separate wired license plate mount camera (PYLE Model PLCM7500). WOOT ($40). The license plate camera fits the screw spacing (8") on the rear cap. I attached it at the top. You can add a small container the same way to hold large connections and extra wiring. I grounded it to the box and ran a hot wire under the rear cap rubber seal, then under the coach and up through the firewall that has a hole left of the brake pedal, then up into the dash (remove the top instrument dash cover) splice it to the ignition wire and find a ground. This way it is on all the time the ignition is on. The backup camera is wired into the backup lights. The picture is the BkUp cam on the box. License plate camera to the left.

I don't need the BkUp Cam anymore for backup (the other one is always on) but I needed it for GPS map display.
It is a 7" flip up screen with "CarPlay".
