David,

You need to remove the hub and press them out with a hydraulic press. A
simple job with the proper tools - just be sure that the hub is
supported properly and be careful - it takes a lot of pressure to break
the old studs loose.

David,

It is not manditory to replace the studs when switching to Alcoa rims
although many do. A longer stud (Dorman 610-218) does add that extra
length that many like.

The trouble with replacing the studs is that you have to completely break
down the hub & knuckle to replace the front studs!! Yes, you have to
remove the knuckle from the suspension, seperate the hub from the knuckle,
unbolt the rotor from the hub, press in the new studs & reverse the
procedure to put everything back. If you are determined to do all of that,
you might as well replace the bearings & seals (you would be there with the
labor) and maybe replace the ball joints if they show any play.

Now you see why some people opt to leave the OEM studs in!!!

The back is not nearly as involved but there is a bit of break down
involved and since you are spending the labor, you might as well look at
the shoes & other related brake parts, repack or replace the bearings &
replace the seals.

And you thought the big part of the job was buying the wheels!!! I respect
a coach when it pulls up with new Alcoas, and wheels studs.

Hope this helps,

Jim Bounds

When I changed to Alcoa's, my coach only had about 35,000 miles on it. Under the
guidance of several old time GMC'ers, I did not change the studs. About that
time there was an anticle about them in (as I remember) Cinnebar's news letter,
saying it wasn't necessary to have threads showing out the end of the nut. The
nut has plenty of grip as is. Just remember to re-torque after your first 100 or
so miles after removing a wheel or first installing.

Wayne,
It is NOT necessary to install the longer studs to use the Alcoa Wheels
on the GMC. The original lug bolt length provides sufficient threads
for 100 % strength when using Alcoa wheels. The pitch diameter for a
9/16 NF thread is 0.526". The GMC studs, Alcoa wheel and nut
combination allows for 0.532" of thread, which is more that the pitch
diameter of the stud. The longer stud does not provide more strength,
it just has more threads exposed. The only reason that I would replace
studs would be if they had been streached. You can check that by
running a lug nut the entire length of the stud and you should be able
to do it with your fingers without any resistance. Just be sure that the
threads are clean.
