Hi everyone. I have a question. Please don't think we're complete idiots. We're just used to a bit newer motorhome that's... Less confusing. Lol.
We're trying to move a 1962 GMC motorhome (model tk-35?).
It's been parked for at least 6 years and not started/ran at all during that time.
Unfortunately, the gentleman that owned it passed away and we know nothing of how to operate this beauty.
Our motorhome is roughly 35 years newer. So this is foreign to us.
We've charged the batteries, which appear to be pretty new. Also have the booster hooked up too.
We can hear the solenoid click, but it won't turn over and start.
Should we put some diesel treatment in with fresh diesel? Would it help anything?
Does anyone knows of a video that shows exactly how to start one of these things? Just to make sure we're turning, pushing, etc., all the right switches.
As I said, ours is completely different. Turn the key, it's running. No air brakes or anything like this one has.
I can't thank you enough for any advice you care to send our way. It's much appreciated.

Based on the TK-35, your motorhome started out as a bus. As Christo said, this forum is for a completely different vehicle which was only produced from 73 thru 78, none of which originally came with a diesel engine. If your VIN starts with TZE, then you would be in the right place but still wouldn't receive much help as only a few owners have converted their motorhome to diesel.

From what I have read in your post the starter is not turning over the engine? If so have you tried to turn the engine over manually? I would remove the starter and bench test it to verify it is working. While it was removed use a pry bar to rotate the engine on the flywheel teeth that the starter engage to verify the motor is not stuck. All internal combustion engines work on similar principles. Break down each one and verify that sequence is working.

I'm not diesel conversant, but I've occasionally had luck rapping the starter with a hammer to loosen things up. Rubber mallet is safer, better judgement is safest!

Good luck with it. Enjoy the adventure!

Where is the vehicle located? Sounds like you need a mechanic to have a look/debug the situation. Hard to find these days but they're out there. We might know some in your area. I'd guess if there's a shop out there willing to work on our rigs, they'd probably consider working on yours.

Send a photo to confirm that this is NOT a GMC Motorhome.
