Window rubber

So last summer I bought a set of window rubber from Sirum’s and am not remembering if the kit took care of the back window? Does anyone know if it does or doesn’t? I’ve got some good spring weather happening in a few weeks and wanted to refurbish the windows.

Thanks,

My rear window rubber has shrunk and split at the glued seam on the bottom. It was leaking a little water at that split so I had the local auto glass shop just reseal it.
I think they all have that separation. About 1/2” on center middle. And that is sealed with sealant.

I have seen a dozen windshields replaced and 3 rear windows. That rubber holding those in always seem to be in good shape and get’s reused.

It was suggested to me to not replace my windshield gasket but it is splitting at the inside corners causing leaks. Of course, the usual passenger header leak was not sealed at the gasket during the windshield(s) replacement and there’s a drip drip drip on the passenger floor when it rains.

I am going to schedule a windshield gasket replacement as soon as my motorhome gets back from the shop. The original owner moved the roof AC unit to the front vent just behind the seats so I need to rig up a roof support to keep it from collapsing when the windshields are removed.

I am concerned with the cost. That gasket is not cheap and the chances of removing two good windshields to get the gasket out without breaking one is around 50% .

How about posting some pictures of those cracks and I will have our windshield guys look at them next weekend when we are in Mineola, TX replacing GMC windshields at the rally. Better yet send them to gmcwindshield@gmail.com . He and I can more easily look at them there.

It is very rare to replace a windshield gasket but we did do one at the Michigan rally last fall.

Hi Ken. Right now my coach is jacked up in the front about 3’ for rear main seal and timing gears replacement. Once the shop is done, I can snap some pics.

I also heard recently that GMCMI was considering a West coast event but I haven’t seen anything published on their website.

I have not heard that rumor. I think the last west coast one was Santa Rosa around 10 years ago. I was there but I flew in and transported a coach back to Michigan for someone.

If you do not know it, we are in Indiana near Chicago. These guys have never gone over 1000 miles from home to install windshields. I know they would go to Denver which is around 1000 miles. We talked about it a few years ago. That still puts you 1000 miles or more away. My problem with organizing a west coast windshield clinic is the travel distance, expense, , and time for the installers. If there was enough interest, i might get the one who is retired to drive out there with the truck with installation tools and supplies while the other two, who have regular full time jobs, could fly in.

Also fall rallies have had much higher participation than Spring ones. So that would help for next fall. I am willing to try to organize it if GMCMI comes that way. Let me get through this one this week, and get it finished. Then and we will see what GMCMI does next.

On that gasket. We had one member last year who had both windshields out and the gasket was broken at the corner. He called me and I contacted the e owner of Preferred Glass. The owner told me to tell him to glue the corner with some adhesive that he specified and reinstall the old gasket. I realize that is not the same problem as yours. He said there is no stress at that point so all we want to do it fix it so it will not leak. He did it that way reinstalled the windshields and sealed them like they do. He has had no problems.

At the last rally one owner showed up with his own mew gasket and they installed it. In the process they discovered the coach had been damaged in the past and whoever did the body work made the opening too tall by around 2". Paul figured a way to get it installed and so far has not heard anything back. The jury is still out on that one. Paul has 45 years in the large vehicle glass business. He will attempt almost anything.

Send me some pictures when ever you get them.

I hope there aren't to many spelling errors. For some reason my spell check is not working.

Here is the official GMCMI Convention to be held on the West Coast: https://mailchi.mp/2fbef7b09947/gmcmi-fall-convention-save-the-date?e=4a107e5de2

Buellton is about 45 miles south of me. If you have a windshield clinic just let me know.

The Coach Glass windshields come from Coburg, OR. If we had a windshield clinic in the nearby Eugene area, there would be no shipping of windshields. Surely that must be a significant benefit. It's not a bad middle-ground for the CA, OR, WA and Canadian west-coasters either. There are quite a few of us.

Yes my windshields are both Coach Glass and were installed in 2020. Unfortunately, the installer did not seal the header on the passenger side and repairing that now will require pulling the windshields.

Well, I will work on it starting in a couple months. Let me finish this one first. There are several impediments that I will have to solve, but maybe we can get this one done. As I said distance, time,. and expense are a few.of the impediments. I will have to see how many coaches /. windshield they would need to make it worth while.

Kim Weeks was always a great supporter of the project but she is leaving. I do not know the new person, and it is his convention to run. I will approach him in a couple of months after he gets his feet wet. and I will see if he is open to this in California and if he is not I will try to sell him on the idea.

All I can say is I will try. We will see if we can pull it off.

Sorry about the fellow with the leaking gaskets. Preferred has repaired several of these done elsewhere, Several were done in Florida . It is possible to seal them correctly without removing them.

Ok Ken, I’ll leave the back window be with its rubber seal. I do want to replace my front windshield windows but that will have to be on next years budget. I’ve maxed out this years unfortunately. Keep us posted on next windshield replacement get together for next year. Count me in for it!

Thanks,
TG

I spent this morning and part of the afternoon plus lunch with the owner. At lunch He ius up to doing California in the fall if te numbers are high enough. I asked for a number and he said maybe 30 spread across three days. The highest we ever did was 28 at one rally. So I have a tentative by in from two of the crew.

As I said before I will work on it, Who knows, Maybe we will pull it together. Right now my prime concern is getting this week accomplished.

Thank you for working with the glass installers to possibly make this happen.

Hey, you are welcome. I have been doing it for about 20 years. The only thing different on this one is getting them to travel 2184 miles and a new convention Manager coming on board.

Ken- do you remember the name of the adhesive?
