Wiper switch removal question

Reviving old thread.

The washer momentary switch is broken on my 78......replacement seems easy enough to find but I'm not clear on how to replace it.
I'd rather not dismantle dash if I don't have to.

Is it possible to do it by removing the wiper knob and "wood" instrument panel trim piece alone? Or must I take back off the panel?
There is talk of trimming something to make this easier

If you read the old thread, it is explained batter than I can. The one thing I did not see (it may be there) is that to get the IP cover out if it
has not been trimmed, you need to shove it as far forward and left as you can and it will - just - clear.

I did read it.....sorry but it's not making much sense to me.

I was hoping someone had a clear set of pictures. Last thing I want to do is damage an otherwise intact dash.

By IP cover, do you mean the woodgrained part?

No, what Matt's referring to is the forward cowling, held on by a Phillips
screw at the outside of each side of the panel. That cowling has a flange
which fits into a groove at the back side of the "doughnut". That flange
is too wide to easily disengage. Trim it before reinstalling it.

This diagram might help. The large itme seeming to float above the rest of the dash is the cowl being talked about that needs trimming to east its
replacement once you do get it out.
It is labeled 0210

I have never seen one that was not already trimmed. Mine was already trimmed and on the few others I have worked on someone previously trimmed them.
I'll bet when they were new or just a few years old lots of GM repair people (dealers etc.) also trimmed them. I'm not sure how to trim them but I
would probably try a rotary file on a dremmel. Someone here probably has a better idea. I just would not want to break it in the process.

If u break it I have 1 or 2 of em. Untrimmed. Never saw the need 2 trim.
