Wineguard Satellite Disk Installation

When the wife and I were at Myrtle Beach we bought a Wineguard Satellite
Dish for our Eleganza SE. We are now ready to do the installation (once the
ice storm has passed).

My question is this. Is there any consistency in the bolt pattern on the
different brands of antennas? When I pull the old antenna off of the roof
will I find a mess trying to get the new antenna in place?

Who has installed one of these Wineguard systems on a GMC before?

Tom;

I installed one just before Marion and it is quite simple to do if you have the
correct size hole saw. The directions are quite good if memory serves me.
The only hassle was deciding where to put it so that it missed the two AC units
on the roof.

Tom,

If it is the manual crank up one, then we have installed one on our GMC.
We did it about 3 years ago. We didn't have a Wineguard crankup TV antenna
before, so I don't know for sure about the bolts matching up. The mount
and crank look identical to the Wineguard TV antennas though, so I would
suspect that the holes would all be the same as their TV antennas. As far
as other brands go, I don't know.

For the installation, we had a little trouble with the sturdiness of the
ceiling. We mounted it over the plastic ceiling piece by the bathroom.
The plastic has no real support, so we were not able to mount it like it
would normally be mounted. We ended up making the mount more secure and
having it go up into the ceiling rather than being mounted flush with the
ceiling. Also, make sure the handle isn't going to affect any door
openings! We forgot to check and were lucky that we were able to get the
bathroom door to clear it.

Tom,
I installed my Wineguard system (I've got the dual Satellite dish and TV
antenna) the week before the International Rally in NC. My Royale had been
owned by a flying club and there was a sealed mounting plate on the roof
just aft of the drivers seat. I'd bet that it was a Wineguard product from
the looks of it.
The hole for the center shaft penetrated the roof just grazing the
forward edge of the roof rafter that the radio antenna is attached to. Only
the center shaft hole matched up with my antenna mounting plate. Four of the
base plate screws went into the roof rafter so it is a solid mount. I
dropped the front ceiling cap so I could route the antenna cables (TV and
satellite) over to the side by the cabinet and down the side. Very clean
installation.
The location is such that I can set in the driver's seat and lower the
antenna which just misses the forward air vent hatch. I have the TV on the
counter just in back of the driver's seat and can easily adjust the dish
while watching the signal strength screen.
I had reception problems with about half the camp sites we stayed at on
the Rally trip (we were gone for about six weeks). A portable antenna might
have helped on a few of those but the sites aren't very big and I'd be
reluctant to put my dish on someone elses "turf". I finally got smart and
started specifically asking for sites with a clear shot South and didn't
have any problems after that.
As a counter to the portable dish remarks, I picked up my son at the
College Station metro in Atlanta...we waited for about two hours for his
plane to come in and he hopped over to meet us via the metro. Fired up the
generator, raised the antenna and watched ZD TV until he arrived. I don't
think I'd put a portable antenna out in the parking lot. : )
I'm surprised at the quality of the reception from the active TV antenna
that was part of the package. I could get all of the local Atlanta stations
very well, for example.
Happy to respond to any questions.
