As Im located in Sweden we use km/h instead of miles. Looking for a replacement from a car that was originally put together for the European market
will be easier if I can start looking for units that fits in another car as well. Did GM use the same speedometers in more cars/trucks other than the
Mobile home?

Thanks!

Let's try again! Fat fingers on an iPhone are a pain!
I drove my 1964 1/2 Mustang in Germany from 1967 to 1971. Pretty easy to multiply miles by 1.6 to get km. Going the other way is also pretty easy. Multiply km by 5/8. 80 km/ is 50 mph. You get used to translating common speeds quite quickly.

Cheers!

You might try to locate a speedometer from a 78 GMC. They have both mph and
kph on the dial.

Here in Canada, one option that usd to be offered by the FEDS when importing vehicles calibrated for MPH was to put transparent decals on the speedo with the corresponding KM/hr values. It was ugly but functional and was an easy method of complying with the regulations. Most of us just peeled the fugly decals off once the vehicle passed inspection.

You could get a GPS speedometer in kms/hour from a US company called Speedhut. Very simple installation. I've been using one now for a couple of years
and as a bonus they are absolutely accurate. I'm just not sure if the size will match the original dash - my dash is not original.

Technically speaking the GMC speedometer dash gauge is based on the 70-72 Olds Cutlass. There are numerous restoration replacements for those
vehicles and you might even find one calibrated in kilometers.

The 77-78 speedos were calibrated in both miles and kilometres. The are a
direct interchange with the earlier units. Even if you get a
non-working unit, a speedo shop can exchange the face and recalibrate it.

I have two thoughts other than trying to find a replacement guage for the dash.

One is use a bicycle computer cyclometer. sets to MPH or KPH, not too hard to wire the sensor.

Porbably easier is use the GPS unit or what might be more fun is get a heads up unit.

I have one I use to check my speeds on my vehicles and it is GPS accurate.

This is one I found on amazon, it is not the one I have.

Thanks all for very good ideas and information :)

I'm a little nerdie about the "original feel" so an old speedometer that fits bolt on is what I will be looking for. Or as some of you said, placing
an extra GPS speedometer keeping the old one intact. The regulations in Sweden however forces me to put on some stickers over the miles once a year
for inspection so finding a replacement unit with km/h is the most convenient solution maybe long term.

Get a speedometer from a car or coch coach that came to the Canadian market. All coaches and cars here after 1976 had to have their primary indicator in kilometres per hour.

If you wish to import one into Sweden, p.m. me with International Address.
I have a properly marked OEM speedometer in my parts collection. Might be a minor hassle, but yours for the price of postage.
Paying it forward.
