Phil;

I respect your opinion, but perhaps the small amount of "comercialism" that is
seen on the net serves a purpose of letting everyone know what is out there.
Although I have never tried the product, I have been tempted after seeing demos
at local car and swap shows. After seeing the responses here I am going to try
it. The GMC net people seem to be a trustworthy, sane group and if the "adds"
get out of hand Patrick can always kick a litel butt.

File it under the same category as non GMC humor and info.

I'm going to chime in with approval as well.
There's nothing wrong with letting us all know what might do our GMC's some good. We very often mention products and brands already and if one (or more) of the products are made available by a fellow lister so much the better.

And as Marcus indicated, if it gets out of hand 'the boss GMCer' will tend to it :-)

with one battery disconnected, still in SAC (voluntarily) with an embarrasingly dirty GMC.

Well said Marcus - that pretty well sums up my stand on this issue.
"Commercialism" is a tough issue for mailing lists. GMCnet is
"non-commercial" by design, but imagine where we would be if Jim Bounds
never chimed in with some of his suggestions. He's found good alternatives
to many of the pricey parts we need and *deserves* to make a profit for his
hard work. Chuck's post did come close to being a pure "commercial", but
I'm willing to be lenient as long as this doesn't become abusive. Chuck has
a good product to sell that he uses himself and I'm pretty sure he ain't
making a bunch of money off it.

On an experimental aviation list I follow, one of the long-time members
that's probably given away close to $20,000 in intellectual property(he's a
CAD designer) in the three years I've been on the list, finally decided
that, since there was such a demand for his product, he would form a company
and sell it. He's one of the nicest guys I've ever met and he's being
crucified(wrongly and hippocritically IMO) for announcing it on the list.

GMCers are in a tough position when it comes to many of the parts we need.
Items like steering knuckles, front control arms and even air bag cones are
getting scarce. As time goes by, these parts will dry up and there's not
enough of a market here for most manufacturers to tool up for these things.
Increasingly, alternates will need to be developed within the GMC community
and I've seen signs that this forum can become a hotbed of this development.

On the aviation list I mentioned above, a group of subscribers(including
yours truly) raised money, purchased wind tunnel time and had a new airfoil
designed to replace the WWI era airfoil that was currently in use on the
design. It was extremely exciting to see this developed on the net by a
group, the majority of whom had never met.

I didn't intend for this to become a dissertation, but in summary, let's not
take ourselves too seriously here. If we allow ideas to flow freely with a
little commercialism thrown in, we've got a lot to gain in the process.

Patrick

I also don't mind some commercial content. After all we need
to get all the information possible in order to properly maintain
our GMC's as well as everything else we own.

If you don't like the content of a message just click on [DELETE] and
that should get rid of it.
