It's been almost 2 and a half years since our first 78 Royale burned up at a road race track event in Hastings Nebraska. Aug 28th of 2015. Went outside this morning to be met with the smell of smoke from a neighbors fire place. In almost an instant. I looked at our shop that our second 78 Royale is parked in. We loved that GMC. And all the memories of the caring people we've met at all the GMCMI rallies that we've been to since 2003. The 42 states it took us to with no real problems. An alternator belt Missouri once, and the float in the carburetor in Nevada was it for on the road repairs. The miles/people well stay. The smell may just end up staying too. Bob Dunahugh

Bob D.:
I remember it well - racing from supper back to the track to find out which of our coaches it was - praying it was not ours all the way - then realizing upon arrival that indeed it was not ours, but it was our good friend's. Then went into prayer for you and Ed.
And shivering in our lawn chairs as we watched you get terrorized (I mean interrogated) by the fire marshal till 1:45 in am.
So very thankful (to this day) that you, Linda, Ed C. & your dog were not in it at the time. Coaches are replaceable as you discovered!!!
And we are glad you did my friend -
Motor On!!

Mike. To say terrorize is a light way to put it. For those that don't know. The Nebraska fire Marshall declared it arson. And that I started the fire. If I turned it into our insurance company. He would have me arrested for insurance fraud. I told him that this GMC had been modified for a powered wheelchair. That's not insured. Plus why would I drive it 350 miles from home to burn it up. He said that I did it for the money. It turned out that he was later repromanded by his superiors. State Farms claims center were saints. This latest 78 Royale has been very dependable for it's first 10,000 miles. Except for all the failing fuel pumps. Bob Dunahugh

Bob,
Jen and myself can relate to the struggle of losing a lot of memories from fire. When we lost our house last year to an electrical fire(faulty power strip in the basement) it was heart breaking. We lost our 3 cats and to this day is a constant memory wherever we travel. I to had to deal with a fire marshal, fortunately in our case he was more concerned about our well being and safety than anything that happened to our home. The insurance investigator on the other was less pleasant at first.
But like was said before along with your family members ours were safe and out of harms way.
Now we can all still spend time with our loved ones and adventure on. Glad your family was safe and wish you guys the best with all your travels.

One of our GMC CASCADERS lost his coach to fire in the last few days. He
was out of town when it burned, so the cause is not known yet. Will keep
you all posted. That makes 6 coaches and 4 tow trucks (one of the coaches
was towed to a storage yard, where it caught fire and burned 4 tow trucks
with it.) that I have knowledge of. I am a firm believer in on board fire
suppression equipment. The Jims both have really good products. Don't know
if it would have helped in Bob's fire, though.

Jim. We lost nothing in comparison to losing what you lost. With fire. There's just nothing left. Bob Dunahugh

Is there enough data to isolate the most common cause? Is there a common
cause for these fires? Are most of them in the engine compartment? If you
keep the system stock do you still run as much fire risk?

Bob,I'm not sure if the fear of experiencing a fire ever goes away.=C2=
=A0 Here's a fire that I experienced...=C2=A0 My father-in-law and I were d=
riving his pickup truck with every part except the body, frame and engine f=
or a '57 T-Bird I was having restored out of state.=C2=A0 The load included=
, among other things, bumpers, convertible top, all the chrome for the car =
and the freshly upholstered seat placed right behind the rear window of the=
truck. The outside temp was about 60 or 65 on a sunny spring day. We didn'=
t have the heater on.=C2=A0 I was driving and had flipped a cigarette out a=
few miles back.=C2=A0 My father-in-law felt heat and asked where it was co=
ming from.=C2=A0 I told him I didn't know and felt down near the floor to f=
eel if any hot air was coming out of the duct.=C2=A0 About then my father-i=
n-law turned around to look out the back window and shouted "THIS THING'S O=
N FIRE!"=C2=A0 My cigarette butt had evidently landed on the T-Bird seat, s=
moldered and caught fire.=C2=A0 I immediately pulled to the side of the int=
erstate, threw the transmission in park and we both jumped out.=C2=A0 At al=
most the same instant the back window blew out and fire blasted into the ca=
b.=C2=A0 We barely made it out.=C2=A0 The pickup burned to the ground befor=
e the fire department got to us. All the freshly restored T-Bird parts were=
destroyed. That was 39-years ago.=C2=A0 A scare still comes over me for a =
second when hot sun suddenly shines on my face through the driver side wind=
ow. =C2=A0It took a long time but I replaced all the lost items.=C2=A0 A fe=
w months later I picked up my restored dream car.=C2=A0 It was black with r=

Geeze...will be installing an engine compartment fire suppression system this spring. Had already decided to do so, but this post has helped to
ensure it happens. At $400 I ask myself, Why isn't this already in my coach? As for Bob Donahugh's experience with a Nebraska Fire Marshall intent
on an arson finding, I am amazed. What an A$$.
