Wheel studs

Netters,
Can anyone tell me the strength or "grade" bolts we should use to
replace the OEM wheel stud bolts? The parts stores seem to have grade 5
(three hash marks on the heads) or grade 8 (5 marks). I believe the
grade 8 bolts are stronger I would automatically go with them but they
are in short supply (I need 32) and are cadmium plated which I fear
would tend to "gall" easier. All comments welcome. Thanks.

OEM wheel studs have no grade mark on them.

Grade 8 only for the studs, grade 5 is fine for auto's but you have a 6
ton ride that need all the strength of the Grade 8 bolts. I would find
a supplier that has the studs that are black in color.

Gary,
Yes, believe that's true, base on the one bolt I hammered out of an old front
hub. But there was a lot of pit corrosion on the head and I thought that
might have obscured any original markings. However the new bolts I looked at
today at Auto Zone and Advance Auto had what looked like to me radial
markings like those found on hex head bolts sometimes. I thought that these
also might be grade markings (so did the parts kids --but I wouldn't place
much faith there). Thanks for your reply. I'm still hoping someone might know
the answer to the question of what grade bolt (if any) we should be using when
replacing these parts.

Phil,

Sorry if I jumped in on the middle of a thread but I was scanning the days
posts and say a mention about wheel studs. If you are using aluminum
wheels, you want to replace the OEM length studas with "Dorman brand-
610-218) These studs are longer. They have a shoulder though that is too
tall for OEM steel rims that will make them stick to the hub even when the
nuts are removed.
