wheel bearing cover

Evening all, I'm looking for, I guess you would call it the front wheel bearing cover, the plate that has the 3 bolts that goes between the front
spindle and hub. If anyone should have one after a 1 ton conversion or any other reason I'd be interested. Just give me a reply or a PM. This is a
copy of a post I put in the Swap meet

Are you talking about the backing plate? Piece of tin between the knuckle
and the hub?

The piece of sheet metal, about 3/16" thick, with the 3 bolts that I believe who's main job is to keep the inside seal in place.

I hope you do remember that the configuration of that part is critical.
Dave Lenzi has shown us a couple of times how to adjust the "ears", where
the 3 holes are located, so that the correct force is applied to the seal.
Sorry I can't remember the details now, but be sure to find and follow
them, rather than just slapping whatever have on there.

That cover is for holding the bearing in. And has a shape that has bent ears for a proper bearing preload in the knuckle bore. Put it on a very flat surface. It should set only on the outer tips of the 3 ears. If the ears set flat. Send them to Dave L. The bearing is a press fit in the knuckle bearing bore. If you can put it in with no effort. The bore is too big. Dave can fix that. If the knuckle needs to go to Dave. Have him put grea sse fittings in the knuckle. Then repaired for the GMC's life. Bob Dunahugh

Could someone elaborate on Mr. Donahugh's comment a few comments up on the bearing cover tabs suppose to have a special bend, I always thought the
bearing preload was set by the factory with the thickness of the spacer in between them and the tightness of the axle nut kept that spacing proper
and the cover just held the outer seal in place. Thanks

The factory spacer between the bearings. Is for the proper bearing adjustment spacing of the two bearings in the set. The cover that you refer too. Is to assure that the bearing set is properly retained in the knuckle bore. If the bearing set starts to become loose in that bore. That bearing cover will retain the bearing in the knuckle bore. I've meant to send a correction on the e-mail below last week. When the bearing cover is on a flat surface. With the ears down on the flat surface. The ears should be up off the flat surface. Dave Lenzi has a die that can correct the bend. DO NOT use a hammer to bend the cover back to the factory bend. REMBER. If you can remove or install the bearings without a press. Get the knuckle bore reworked by Jim K at Applied. Or Dave Linzi. Bob Dunahugh
